Officer finds knife on student

AUSTINTOWN -- A Mahoning County Career and Technical Center student who got off an Austintown school bus was found to have a knife, police reported.
Police said an officer waited for the teenager to get off the bus at 3 p.m. Tuesday at East Webb and North Four Mile Run roads. Someone had reported that he'd gotten off the bus Monday, taken a gun from his bookbag and pointed it down the road.
When the teenager got off the bus Tuesday, he told the officer that he had accidentally taken a BB gun to school with him the day before.
The officer searched the bookbag and found nothing. When he patted down the teenager, he found a folding knife, the report said.
The boy told the officer he uses the knife at work to open boxes.
The teenager's mother arrived and told the officer her son did tell her Tuesday that he'd taken his BB gun to school, but that it was left at home Wednesday.
Austintown schools Superintendent Doug Heuer said Wednesday that he's trying to find out where the case stands before he determines if any action will be taken.
Roan Craig, superintendent at the career center, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
