MVSD reaches deal with two companies

The dock will help with the construction of two bridges.
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District has made a deal with two companies involved in the construction of two bridges over Meander Reservoir.
Tom Holloway, MVSD chief engineer, said Wednesday that in exchange for allowing the construction of a dock to help in the building of two Interstate 80 bridges, the two companies will make some needed district improvements.
Although he didn't know the specific dollar amounts, Holloway termed it a "considerable" expenditure by Great Lakes Construction Co. of Hinckley and Anthony Allega Cement Contractors Inc. of Independence.
Improvements
Holloway said the companies will replace the fencing between I-80 and Mahoning Avenue, make roof repairs at the Berlin Pump Station at Berlin Reservoir and install a security camera.
The Berlin pump station is used as a backup system if water needs to be transferred from Berlin to Meander Reservoir, the district's primary domestic water source.
The MVSD draws water from Meander and treats and sells it wholesale to Youngstown, Niles and McDonald.
In exchange for the improvements, Great Lakes and Anthony Allega will construct a 125- to 150-foot dock on a two-acre site at the tip of a peninsula just south of the eastbound span.
The westbound span will be constructed along the current I-80 bridge. The eastbound span will be built first just south of the current bridge.
The firms need the dock to move manpower, machinery and materials out onto the water for the $86.7 million project.
