Trumbull board certifies election results

WARREN -- Trumbull County Board of Elections has certified the count of the May primary election ballot, showing the Maplewood school levy passed by 10 votes.
"It's a good day for Maplewood," Ruth Zitnik, interim superintendent, said Tuesday after the board certified the election results.
The official vote was 976 in favor and 966 against the 5.5-mill issue that will generate about $508,000 annually for the district.
Kelly Pallante, elections board director, said no races qualified for an automatic recount.
Zitnik, also principal of Maplewood High School, said the goal is to get the district that is under state-imposed fiscal caution back to fiscal solvency.
"It doesn't mean all our problems are solved," Zitnik said of the voter approval. "We need to cut back significantly" without negatively affecting students.
She explained that the school board has not been replacing retirees, including teachers, and the district wouldn't be filling the positions that have been vacated.
