Kirtland defeats Mathews in Div. IV



Canfield won a MAC game to remain in the hunt for a title.
EASTLAKE -- The Kirtland High softball team scored in the first inning then hung on for a 1-0 victory over Mathews in Tuesday's Division IV district final at Eastlake North High.
Caitlin Youngs tossed a three-hitter but took the loss for the Mustangs (20-4).
Kirtland advances to the Kent State regional and will play Strasburg Thursday.
Canfield 10, Salem 0
SALEM -- Lauren Sulick pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts leading Canfield over Salem in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Melissa West hit two doubles and two singles to pace the Cardinals (21-3, 8-1). Rachel Melewski hit two doubles and a single.
Brittany Gregory (11-12) struck out two for the Quakers.
Boardman 3, Fitch 1
BOARDMAN -- Shannon Morrow (2-0) pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks, while Nicole Williams hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie.
Samantha Peters had two singles for Boardman (9-11).
Kara Warren pitched a five-hitter for Fitch.
Crestwood 8, Southeast 4
RAVENNA -- Crestwood scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to turn back Southeast in a Portage Trail Conference game.
Ally Cook paced Crestwood (13-12) with a single and triple, while Courtney Carnes, Lisa Light and Brittany Moore hit two singles apiece.
Ali Austin hit a triple and single for the Pirates (13-15).
Baseball
RAVENNA -- Don King pitched a two-hitter as Southeast posted a 3-0 victory over Crestwood in a Portage Trail Conference game.
Southeast (8-19, 6-8 PTC) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Joe Knopick hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs for the Pirates. Richard Hedrick hit two singles.
Crestwood is 9-15, 6-8.
East Palestine 12, Southern 0
EAST PALESTINE -- The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first inning and four in the second in the Tri-County League game.
Chris Cheeks paced East Palestine (21-6, 8-3 TCL) with a triple and he drove in four runs. Steve Mazza hit three singles.
