Chase ends in man's capture
AUSTINTOWN -- In the end, Austintown K-9 Hurie got his man.
Austintown police Sgt. Tom Collins and his canine partner ended a high-speed chase of a Chevrolet van reported stolen.
The van is one that Youngstown police said matches the description of a van used in a drugstore robbery, Collins said.
Collins did not identify the driver, who was alone. He said Poland Township will file charges. Police there could not be reached Tuesday night.
Collins said the chase began in Poland Township, and the van was reported stolen in Niles. Youngstown police pursued the van in the Oak Hill area and onto Mahoning Avenue, then into Austintown around 9 p.m.
Collins said Struthers police were also involved in the chase, and at one point the driver of the van tried to ram a Struthers police car. The chase continued northbound onto Four Mile Run Road, then westbound onto County Line Road.
Collins said when the driver turned onto Mulberry Run, a residential area where many young couples with children live, he pulled his car in front of the van to slow it down. He said the van rear-ended his vehicle, then stopped, and the driver ran.
Collins released his dog, who chased the man behind some houses and caught up with him in the woods.
