Girl, 14, killed, 11 injured in car-church van accident
A 12-year-old girl is in critical condition.
COLUMBUS GROVE, Ohio (AP) -- A car crashed into a church van at an intersection, killing a 14-year-old girl in the van and injuring 11 others, officials said.
The car's driver, Aloysius Warnecke, 91, from Columbus Grove, is accused of running a two-way stop sign, causing the crash Sunday afternoon near this northwestern Ohio town, the State Highway Patrol said.
The van, from Harvest Assembly of God Church in nearby West Leipsic, was carrying eight children and two adults.
Jasmin Wickard, of Leipsic, was pronounced dead at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, patrol dispatcher Matthew Knutson said.
Her 13-year-old sister, Jessica, was released after treatment along with two other teens and the van's driver. Warnecke and his passenger, his 86-year-old wife Anna Marie, also were treated then released.
Critical condition
Among the others hospitalized was Shelby Davis, 12, of Leipsic, who was in critical condition Monday at Toledo Children's Hospital, the nursing supervisor said. The other four injured people who were hospitalized Monday -- three teens and a 22-year-old woman -- had less severe injuries, officials said.
The patrol didn't know where the van was headed. A voicemail message seeking comment was left Monday at the church.
The crash remained under investigation.
Columbus Grove is about 55 miles southwest of Toledo.
