Dave Kessler of the child and elder protection section of the Ohio Attorney General's office and Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Linette G. Quinn gave these tips to avoid being conned. Homeowners should:
Lock their doors anytime they go outside.
Never allow strangers inside their home.
Check with a utility company before letting repairmen in their home.
Check with the Better Business Bureau to verify that a contractor is properly licensed, bonded and insured.
Never sign any contract or agreement without carefully checking it out.
Pay by check or credit card so payment can be stopped if dissatisfied with the work.
Immediately call the police to report any scams. Be sure to get a good physical description and license plate number of any suspicious people.
