WNBA ROUNDUP Saturday's games
Sky 83, Sting 82
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jia Perkins made three free throws with one second remaining Saturday night, lifting expansion Chicago over Charlotte. Perkins' foul shots spoiled a fourth-quarter comeback by the Sting, who had scored 18 consecutive points in the game's final three minutes, erasing a 16-point deficit and taking an 82-80 lead on LaToya Bond's 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining. Chicago's Candice Dupree, a rookie from Temple, scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Bond scored 15.
Monarchs 105, Mercury 78
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Erin Buescher scored a career-high 18 points to lead defending champion Sacramento over Phoenix. The win capped quite a week for the Monarchs, who visited President Bush at the White House on Tuesday and prior to the game received their rings for the franchise's first WNBA championship before a sellout crowd at Arco Arena. Nicole Powell and Yolanda Griffith both scored 14 points for the Monarchs, who never trailed after a huge second quarter. Kristin Haynie scored 11 points and Rebekkah Brunson added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Rookie Scholanda Dorrell also had 10 points for Sacramento. Bothered by a quadriceps injury, Diana Taurasi played 26 minutes and led the Mercury with 14 points. Tamicha Jackson also scored 14 points and Ann Strother made four 3-pointers and had 12 points.
Sun 91, Liberty 74
UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Nykesha Sales scored 19 points and matched a career high with 10 rebounds to lead Connecticut over New York. It was the first season-opening win for the Sun since they moved from Orlando to Connecticut four years ago. Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 16 points and eight boards, and reserve forward Asjha Jones finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Lindsay Whalen was playing in her first competitive game since last year's finals. She has been rehabilitating from offseason ankle surgery, and although a little rusty, finished with five points, five assists and a pair of steals in 17 minutes.
