CAMPBELL -- An Austintown man who identified himself with the name of a relative when arrested fled from Campbell Municipal Court, prompting a search in this community by three police departments.
Campbell police arrested Paul Kalosky, 31, of Deer Creek Court, early Friday, charging him and a woman, Cassandra Stewart, 26, of Burkey Road, Austintown, with breaking and entering. The two are accused of breaking into a vacant house on Van Buren Avenue.
Police said that upon his arrest, Kalosky gave the name of one of his brothers.
When he was in municipal court Friday afternoon, he escaped. Patrolman George Frazeskos said police hadn't yet interviewed court personnel to determine the circumstances of the escape.
There were reports that Kalosky fled after being allowed to use a restroom at the court.
About 1:20 p.m., police got the call that Kalosky had escaped. They found bent leg shackles and a pair of shoes during the search, but Kalosky remained at large.
Frazeskos, who indicated that felony escape will be added to the charges against Kalosky, said witnesses reported seeing Kalosky wearing handcuffs but the chain between the cuffs had been broken.
Cruisers collide
On the way to a location where someone reported seeing a person who matched Kalosky's description, a city cruiser and a Coitsville cruiser collided at Penhale Avenue and 10th Street. No one was injured.
Besides the city and Coitsville, Poland Township police also participated in the search, which centered on a four-block radius in the city, Frazeskos said.
Paco, the police dog from Poland, initially picked up a scent but lost it. After a couple of hours, authorities called off the search.
Kalosky is 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighs about 225 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen with a slight beard, wearing a T-shirt, blue jeans and no shoes, police said.
Chief Gus Sarigianopolous said anyone with information about Kalosky's whereabouts should call police at (330) 755-1411.
Past trouble with the law
This isn't Kalosky's first brush with the law nor his first escape charge.
In February 2005, Kalosky fled from St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he'd been taken after leading Austintown police on a foot chase.
In that case, an Austintown officer saw Kalosky at the Sheetz service station at Mahoning Avenue and state Route 46 driving a Dodge Caravan that had been listed as a stolen vehicle. Kalosky fled into a wooded lot behind the store when the officer turned on his cruiser lights.
A police dog followed, and Kalosky was accused of hitting the dog before the animal bit him. He started to have a seizure and was taken to the hospital.
The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, a multiagency entity coordinated by the U.S. Marshals Service, apprehended Kalosky in March 2005 in the kitchen of a relative's Youngstown home.
