Winthrop: Matt Repec is among the top Eagles' hitters, batting .335. The Boardman native, a four-year starter, has a career .305 average and will be in the starting lineup as Winthrop (41-12, 16-5 Big South Conference) attempts to match the 44 wins by last year's team. "Matt has been our starting shortstop for four years," said 14th-year coach Joe Hudak. "He had shoulder surgery right after the season last year, after playing most of the season hurt. He's a tough kid and our team captain." Repec has started every game for the Eagles since his freshman year, including 66 last year as Winthrop won the Big South championship and advanced to the NCAA regional tournament. This season Repec has started 53 games. He has 72 hits in 215 plate appearances, with 17 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 60 RBIs. He's scored 42 runs and leads the team with 26 two-out RBIs.
John Carroll: Staci Ziobert, a sophomore shortstop-second baseman, started 38 games for the softball team this season. The Ursuline High graduate batted .273 (30-for-110) for the Blue Streaks (19-21, 5-13 Ohio Athletic Conference). She hit four doubles, two home runs and drove in nine runs. She's majoring in chemistry with a sociology minor and carries a 3.4 GPA. Barbie Lewis (Howland), a sophomore pitcher for the Blue Streaks, appeared in 15 games with five starts. She had a 2-3 record; in 34 innings, she's allowed 34 hits, struck out 23, walked 14 and has a 3.29 ERA.
Mount Union: Paul Namey, a Kennedy Catholic graduate, was named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference academic baseball team. A junior third baseman, Namey is sport management major with a 3.91 GPA. He batted .292 for the Raiders this spring. Para Halkias, a senior tennis standout at Warren Harding High will continue her athletic career at Mount Union. Halkias, a team MVP and four-year letter winner at Harding, was a first-team Steel Valley Conference selection. She plans on majoring in history at Mount Union. Her sister, Eleni Halkias, a junior in 2006, is Mount Union's No. 1 singles player.
Bethany: Senior center-fielder Emily Patton, a Poland native, was named second team All-East Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. It is the second time in her career that she's earned all-region. This year she batted .343 to lead the Bison and rank ninth in the President's Athletic Conference. Patton ended her career by being named first team All-PAC for the third team. She was the eighth player in Bethany history to earn all-conference honors all four years. She leaves Bethany with a pair of career records, including at-bats (565).
Edinboro: Julie Nemergut, a South Range High graduate, will compete in the NCAA Division II track and field championships starting Thursday in Emporia, Kan. Nemergut, a senior, will compete in the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs. She has the ninth-best time in the nation in the 5000 (17:04.6). Her qualifying time in the 10,000 is 36:38.79.
Thiel: College officials announced construction of on-campus baseball and softball complexes later this spring. In partnership with the Borough of Greenville, Thiel received the largest grant in the history of the institution to make three additions possible. The state's Recreational Challenge grant will assist with expenses for both the baseball and softball complexes, along with an arts-related facility on the north side of the campus. The fields will be located on the west side of the campus near Riverside Park.
