Boardman duo headed to state



OBERLIN -- The trail of the doubles team of Robert Salcedo and Chris Leson continues as the Boardman pair advanced to next weekend's Division I state tennis tournament.
Salcedo and Leson won their first match Saturday in the district tournament at Oberlin College, then lost the second.
Salcedo-Leson beat Tim Carey and Tom Carey of Cleveland St. Ignatius, 6-2, 6-2, then lost to Maurice Rucker and Adrian Barker of Shaker Heights, 6-3, 6-4.
However, by registering a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over another Shaker Heights duo, Andy Harding-Robert Williams, the Spartans earned a No. 5 seed at state.
Division II
CANTON -- Brendan Kinkopf of University School, Triway's A.J. Nelson, Orange's Adam Greenes and Brad Lodge of Aurora were state singles qualifiers following district tennis competition Saturday.
Kinkopf is seeded No. 1 for the state tournament next weekend.
In semifinals, Kinkopf defeated Lodge, 6-1, 6-1, while Nelson beat Greenes. In the finals, Kinkopf beat Nelson, 6-1, 6-3, and Greenes topped Lodge, 6-3, 7-5.
Qualifiers in doubles were Brett Tobin and Zak Kelm of University School, Devin Vrabel-Quinn Parker of Central Catholic, Aris Spirtos-Rodney James of Highland and Alex Schneider-Josh Berggrun of Orange.
