ATHENA TEACHER HONORED



Athena teacher honored
BOARDMAN -- Martha Taylor of the Athena School of Excellence for Girls in Youngstown has been named Teacher of the Year by Sam's Club 6322 in Boardman. Taylor was surprised recently by a visit from Sam's Club representatives at the school to present her with the award. The honor includes a $1,000 education grant to the school, a $100 gift certificate for her classroom, a Teacher of the Year shirt and a leather briefcase. Taylor was recognized for her love of teaching and actions as a mentor to her pupils at Athena, one of two gender schools operated by the Youngstown School District, providing classes to seventh- and eighth-grade girls.
Attending LA summit
NILES -- Clayton McIssac, son of Jack and Angie McIssac and a pupil at Niles Middle School, has been selected to attend the People to People Leadership Summit in Los Angeles July 17-26. He was nominated and accepted for the honor based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential. The summit will focus on leadership, team building, community service, college admissions and professional aspirations.
MCCTC seniors win award
CANFIELD -- Ten seniors at Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center have received the High Schools That Work Award of Educational Achievement. They qualified for the honor by completing a college preparatory course of study in at least two of the three subject areas of English, math and science; by completing a concentration in a a career-technical area, math/science or the humanities; and by meeting performance goals in reading, math and science on the 2006 HSTW national assessment. The honorees and their home schools are: David Courtney of West Branch, Jeffrey Doran of Canfield, Kati Gatewood of Western Reserve, Mindy Gribben and Nikki Williams of South Range, Jessica Groves and James Woodward of Struthers, Michael McCray and Keli Shabella of Campbell and Matthew Ward of Austintown.
Donation to food bank
McDONALD -- McDonald High School students recently donated $1,436 to Second Harvest Food Bank, which gives food to the needy in the Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana County areas. The money was raised during March by students donating loose change. Other fund-raising projects held this year included a Candy Cane Sale, proceeds from which were donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The Giving Tree, in which students and faculty bought Christmas gifts for needy children from the Niles, Mineral Ridge and McDonald areas. The students also collected coats for the needy.
Student art show planned
CANFIELD -- Canfield Local Schools will have its 2006 Student Art Show from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the high school gym. The program includes music, a band and soloist, food and other entertainment.
Attending Paris seminar
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Dr. Andrew Ade, Westminster College assistant professor of English, is one of 15 scholars in the nation selected to attend the National Endowment for the Humanities Seminar scheduled this summer in Paris.
Led by Maria DiBattista and Suzanne Nash of Princeton University, the major part of the seminar will be devoted to the revolutionary works of modernism in its ascendant phase: Literature by Gertrude Stein, Guillaume Apollinaire, Ernest Hemingway, Andre Breton and Henry Miller; paintings by Picasso and Braque; surrealist writings and film.
Ade intends to prepare a future Westminster course on the American experience in Paris during the first decades of the 20th century.
