Spay, neuter program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County's new spay and neuter program begins Monday, dog warden Mike Fox says. Dogs that are adopted from the pound will be sent to a local veterinarian for sterilization and rabies shots before they are released to their new owners. Fox and his staff will transport dogs to participating veterinarians, who are Dr. Donald Allen of Boardman and the Animal Charity office on South Avenue near Midlothian Boulevard. The dog pound will remain open until 7 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning next week, to facilitate more adoptions, Fox added. Regular kennel hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
EMS open house set
CANFIELD -- The Cardinal Joint Fire District will have an EMS open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canfield Fire Station No. 1, 104 Lisbon St. There will be demonstrations of firetrucks, EMS equipment, ambulances, vehicle extraction and the Canfield Police Department's dogs. A MedEvac helicopter will make a landing. The family-oriented event is in observation of National EMS Week.
AMVETS meeting
CANFIELD -- The annual meeting of the Ohio AMVETS 19th District Council is at noon Sunday at the Mahoning Veterans Memorial on the Canfield Fairgrounds. The meeting will include an election of officers for the 2006-07 program year and an address by AMVETS National Vice Commander J.P. Brown III. Youngstown AMVETS Post 44 is host for the event.
School art exhibition
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles Church will have its second annual Museum of Art exhibition Saturday and Sunday at the church social hall near the corner of U.S. Route 224 and Market Street. Each sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grader at St. Charles School has an entry in the show, which begins with a gallery opening from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. The gallery also will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
Vacant-house fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a late-night fire that caused $25,000 in damage, firefighters have recommended that a vacant three-story house at 426 E. Myrtle Ave. be demolished. Crews sent to the scene around 10 p.m. Wednesday found that the fire had apparently been set in a stairwell between the first and second floors. It was the second fire at the house in a short period of time, reports show.
Robbery suspect sought
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are looking for a suspect in a recent robbery and a robbery attempt. Austintown Detective Sgt. Dan Kosco said Gary P. Brainard Jr., 37, of North Redgate Lane, is wanted on two counts of aggravated robbery. Brainard is accused in the 5 a.m. Tuesday robbery of a man going to his car outside his apartment on Woodhurst Drive. The man was robbed of $100 at gunpoint. Brainard also is charged in the 4:50 a.m. Wednesday attempted robbery of a taxi driver outside a home on Lynnhaven Drive. The robber pointed an object at the driver and demanded money. The taxi driver pulled out a gun, and the robber ran away.
AIDS memorial event
WARREN -- The Mahoning Valley observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial will be at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the gazebo in Courthouse Square. Mayor Michael O'Brien will make remarks, and musical entertainment will be provided by Anthony Ruggiero and Elizabeth Rubino. A reception begins at 7:30 p.m. in the log cabin across from the square. The Trumbull County Area AIDS Task Force has coordinated the local event for the past 19 years. The vigil is held in remembrance of the lives lost to AIDS and in support of people living with HIV and AIDS.
White-sock collection
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Save Our Soles Ministry at St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, 93 E. Myrtle Ave., is collecting new white socks for preschoolers through high school students. Donations are being accepted from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sundays at Homestead Park, 829 E. Dewey Ave. Arrangements for donations may be made by calling Jeannie Anderson at (330) 318-8555 or Vera Carroll at (330) 399-6583. The socks will be given away from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 26 at Homestead Park.
