Jimmy DeCapua says his band, Jones 4 Revival, doesn't sound like anything else that's out there right now. And that's because there's nothing out there right now that he cares to sound like.
"Music has gone downhill," said DeCapua. "Most of it is stuff that isn't pleasing to the common ear."
The desire to revive the Youngstown scene is what drove DeCapua, along with drummer Zack Lowe and bassist Matt Hahn, to form Jones 4 Revival.
DeCapua, a Poland High and Kent State University graduate, believes in his music, sometimes so strongly that some might construe it as cockiness. I mean, how many other bands have the guts to give themselves a name that reflects their desire to give the music scene a swift kick in the pants?
Sound
DeCapua describes the Jones sound as upbeat jazz and jam. "We call it musical stimulation for your mind," he said.
The group's members bring a divergent set of musical influences to the product. "I'm inspired by jazz guitarists," said DeCapua, who also admits a penchant for jam bands. Lowe, who is a Chaney High and KSU grad, favors hip-hop, while Hahn, also a Chaney and KSU grad, leans toward alt-rock and Dave Mathews-style jam bands.
The three-piece hasn't been together long but has made strides quickly. They've already booked eight shows in area rock bars in upcoming weeks, including the Cedar's in downtown Youngstown, and are also planning a trip to New York to record a demo CD.
They will be playing at Mojo's Pub and Grill in Austintown tonight..
The threesome formed shortly after they graduated from KSU and returned to Youngstown.
DeCapua, who has a day job at the Guitar Center in Youngstown, said he decided to take his musical dreams seriously after returning to the Valley.
All three members were previously in other bands, most notably the Old School Perverts.
And all of their songs are originals, with DeCapua doing all the writing. "I take [my songs] to the guys and they jam and make it what it is," he said. He also plays lead guitar and handles lead vocals.
What should newcomers expect from a Jones live show? "They're guaranteed to have a great time," said DeCapua. "It's fun music, party music, dance music. It makes you happy. You'll want to be out of your seat. If I saw us for the first time, I'd become a follower."
