Boardman's doubles still alive in Div. I
OBERLIN -- Boardman High's doubles team of Robert Salcedo and Chris Leson won one match and lost one in the Division I district tennis tournament at Oberlin College Wednesday.
The Spartans return Saturday in a consolation semifinal; a victory would qualify them for the state tournament next weekend.
Salcedo and Leson won their first match of the tournament, 6-2, 6-2, over Tim and Tom Carey of Cleveland St. Ignatius.
In a quarterfinal round match, the Boardman duo lost to Maurice Rucker and Adrian Barker of Shaker Heights, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Salcedo-Leson will next play Jimmy Jeffries and Ceue' Ferreira of Canton GlenOak in the consolation round.
In singles play, Boardman's Scott Warden lost to Alberto Filizzola of Elyria, 7-6 (5), 6-2, in the first round and was eliminated.
Division II
CANTON -- Area tennis players had a rough day in the Division II district tennis tournament Thursday at Weis Park Courts. Both singles participants and all four doubles teams went down to defeat.
In singles, Poland's Anthony Rosselli dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to John Smetona of University School, while Cardinal Mooney's Josh Cook defeated Dave DeVore of Canton Central Catholic, 6-0, 6-0, then lost to Orange's Adam Greenes 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, A.J. Cook and Nick Morcos of Mooney lost to Brett Tobin and Zak Keim of University School 6-2, 6-1.
The team of Chad Ruehs and Matt McElroy of Poland was beaten by Paul Smetona and Steve Shin of University, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, while Warren JFK's Andrew Barran and Albert Cavelli lost to Sam Gray and Jon Esber of Central Catholic 6-3, 6-0.
The Youngstown area's top doubles team Fred Romeo and Brad Broucher of Poland lost out to Rob Stein and Pat Spittler of Walsh Jesuit, 6-3, 6-5.
