Board hires athletic director and C.H. Campbell principal

The school board approved two union contracts with nonteaching employees.
CANFIELD -- The Canfield school board has hired a new high school athletic director and a new principal for C.H. Campbell Elementary School, schools superintendent Dante Zambrini said.
Gregory H. Cooper, who is now deputy athletic director at the United States Naval Academy, will replace Lee Frey, who is returning under the district's retire-rehire program to teach social studies, Zambrini said.
Zambrini said Cooper, a Toledo native and a Boardman High School graduate, is retiring from his 30-year military career and returning to the area. He is now living in Annapolis, Md.
Cooper will make $71,285 under a one-year contract with extended days.
Kent Polen, now an assistant principal at Struthers Elementary School, will take the helm at C.H. Campbell, Zambrini said.
Polen was also a principal at J.A. Garfield Intermediate School in Garrettsville and at Southern Local Intermediate School in Salineville.
He will make $62,909 under a two-year contract.
Board approves contracts
At their meeting Wednesday, the board also approved two union contracts, one with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees and one with Canfield Bus Drivers Association.
Zambrini said the contracts are two-year extensions, with 2.5 percent raises the first year and 2 percent raises the second year.
OAPSE covers 18 job classifications, including secretaries and custodians. Zambrini said that under the new contract, secretaries at the low end of the pay scale will make $12.54 an hour next year, up from $12.23. At the top of the scale, they will make $15.76, up from $15.38.
Custodians at the low end of the pay scale will make $12.94 an hour, up from $12.62. At the top of the scale, hourly wages increase from $15.50 to $15.89.
