2 boys, 13, to be charged in death-threat prank
The boys' parents cooperated with police to find out what happened.
NILES -- Two cousins will be charged in Trumbull County Juvenile Court after admitting they left a computer disk containing a death threat on the front porch of another cousin's home, police said.
"We're just glad it wasn't more than that," Police Chief Bruce Simeone said Thursday.
The unidentified 13-year-old boys -- one from Niles, the other from Cortland -- each will be cited for making a false alarm. The charges were determined after police met with the county prosecutor's office.
Niles police said the boys admitted leaving the disk on the porch of a female cousin's home here as a prank.
The threat was directed at an unidentified person and was to occur June 6 at a field in Howland, police said.
BCI analyzed disk
The disk was analyzed by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. This information led to the identities of the boys, police said.
They were questioned at Niles police headquarters by city detectives and a school resource officer.
The two admitted their involvement, police said, explaining "they meant no harm to anyone and just wanted to scare a relative."
Simeone said the boys' parents cooperated and "wanted to get to the bottom if it." He described the boys as being "more than apologetic."
Police credited BCI and Howland police for their quick response and for the Niles resident who promptly notified police in "what could have been a serious matter," Simeone added.
