GIRARD -- A man accused of supplying illegal substances to a Girard teen who later died will be back in Girard Municipal Court later this month.
Timothy Wyland, 38, of Superior Street in Youngstown, appeared Wednesday before Judge Michael Bernard to face one felony charge of corruption with drugs and two felony charges of permitting drug abuse. He is in the Trumbull County Jail with bond set at $250,000.
Wyland did not enter a plea to the felony charges. He will be back in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Police reports say Wyland may have spent hours in a Liberty motel room March 24 supplying drugs to two teenage girls from Girard.
One of the girls, Cortney L. Rushwin, 16, of Hillside Drive, Girard, died the next morning at her home. She was a junior at Girard High School.
Humphrey Germaniuk, Trumbull County coroner, said Cortney died of drug intoxication involving several different drugs. He said morphine, cocaine, methadone and marijuana were in the girl's system.
Germaniuk said the combination of drugs suggest that "speed balling" -- use of a depressant and stimulant in combination -- may have taken place before Rushwin died.
Captured in Florida
Wyland was captured a few days after Cortney's death after a 36-hour, nonstop dragnet by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, which comprises local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
It's unclear how, but Wyland managed to get to Pittsburgh International Airport and fly to Florida when police began looking for him.
A desk clerk at a Traveler's Inn Motel in Florida recognized a photograph of Wyland, who had checked into the motel. The motel was surrounded by police with the help of canine units and a helicopter.
Wyland attempted to flee the motel room but was captured. Found in his room were suspected heroin and marijuana, syringes and spoons that may have been used to cook drugs.
Wyland has a criminal record that includes four narcotics convictions.
