Memorial in Struthers to honor veterans

STRUTHERS -- A memorial to be placed on Struthers High School property that's designed to honor veterans who served in the five branches of the military is moving closer to fruition.
Gene Yuhas, chairman of a veterans memorial group, told officials at Tuesday's board of education meeting that he anticipates a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project to be June 6 at the school, 111 Euclid Ave. The project, estimated to cost around $74,000, will have one monument each to represent those who served in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, Yuhas noted.
Yuhas, of Struthers, added that he hopes the granite monuments, which cost about $3,000 apiece, will be installed by July 4.
Also included will be four benches, an American and state flag, and one to recognize prisoners of war. So far, several trees donated by Mahoning County commissioners are in place, he said.
For $50 each, people can buy bricks and have inscribed the names of loved ones, the military branch they served in and other information, Yuhas said.
