Man pleads innocent to injuring baby son

WARREN -- A 21-year-old man remains in Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond on a child endangering charge, while his infant son is in fair condition in Akron Children's Hospital with multiple injuries.
David T. Smith Sr., 21, of Belle Street Southeast, pleaded innocent to the second-degree felony charge during a video arraignment from jail Monday morning before Municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak.
The judge ordered him to have no contact with his 7-month-old son, David Jr. Smith's preliminary hearing is set for 10:15 a.m. next Monday.
Detective Michael Currington said the baby suffered head injuries and a broken arm and had bite marks on his body. Smith claimed he accidentally bit the child, Currington said.
Police were dispatched to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital on Friday evening after the baby suffered the injuries in his residence about 9 p.m. Friday. The baby was later transferred to the Akron hospital.
Police and the Trumbull County Children Services Board are investigating.
