Trumbull teens get leadership awards



The recipients have a combined membership of 23 years.
CORTLAND -- Brittany Scott of Cortland and Melissa Taylor of Warren were awarded the American Youth Foundation's National Leadership Award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership.
The honor was presented by the Trumbull County 4-H Advisory Board at its monthly meeting this month.
The award is presented each year by the American Youth Foundation in cooperation with school principals, counselors, county 4-H Extension educators, church groups and other organizations across the country.
The award was first offered in 1941 by the late William H. Danforth, founder of Ralston Purina Co. in St. Louis, who challenged young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence others through a life of service.
About the recipients
Brittany is the daughter of Lori Corley and Michael Scott. She is a 10-year 4-H member and participates in the Touch of Class 4-H Club and the Junior Saddle Horse club. She has taken projects in leadership and horses. Some additional activities Brittany has been involved with are: 4-H Advisory Board Teen Representative, Royal Court Queen, club president and vice president, attended the Ohio 4-H Teen Expo, and participated in the 4-H Public Speaking contest.
Melissa is the daughter of Ginny and Bryan Taylor. She is a 13-year 4-H member and participates in both the Everything Under The Son and Kounty Kritters 4-H club, as well as the Trumbull County 4-H Fashion Board.
Melissa has taken projects in the area of rabbits, clothing, foods and nutrition, and leadership. In addition, she has been a club president, vice president and treasurer, is a 4-H Advisory Board Teen representative, has participated in the Ohio 4-H Teen Expo and the Trumbull County 4-H Proclamation Day.
In addition to a certificate of recognition, each recipient received a copy of Danforth's inspirational book, "I Dare You!" More than 7,000 schools, 4-H programs and other organizations take part in this National Leadership Award yearly.
