SRU Art Club to paint mural on gazebo
The mural is part of an effort to enhance Main Street.
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The next "Art on the Street" project here begins Monday. Slippery Rock University Art Club, led by three art majors, will paint a colorful mural on the gazebo and parking lot side of 150 S. Main St.
Lauren Plesko, Kent Miller, Susan Wasnieski and others will paint the back wall with a 20-by-10-foot mural.
Nora Ambrosio, SRU dance department chairwoman and a local resident, has been working with the students on the mural project. "It will accent spring in Slippery Rock and follow the redevelopment themes of natural settings and local artists," she said.
The mural will be of "abstract green squares floating through space on a buttery yellow background," Plesko said.
Location
The building, owned by Emily Farquhar and her partners, is between Lenz Travel Services and the Hair Studio, and is under renovation.
The Rock House Coffeehouse will be going into the first floor. The mural wall is on the back of the building, facing the parking lot and the gazebo.
This project was made possible through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, a state agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Venango Center for the Creative Development.
Slippery Rock Development Inc. is a nonprofit organization formed in 1999 to renew Main Street, making it attractive to business and the citizens.
Phase I was completed about a year ago, which included burying utilities underground and adding amenities such as a gazebo and community kiosk, parking lot and two new parks.
