Parks' hit in 12th gives YSU 4-3 win

STRUTHERS -- Brent Parks hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the 12th to lift Youngstown State to a 4-3 victory over UW-Milwaukee in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Cene Park.
Parks' single capped a three-run rally for the Penguins, who scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Ryan Sellman threw three innings of shutout relief to improve to 5-0, and starter Lucas Engle allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings. Engle struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Ninth-inning rally
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Penguins got two runs across on three hits to force the game into extra innings. Charles Schultz drove in Erich Diedrich on a pinch-hit single up the middle with one out, and UWM closer Jed Dolske walked J.D. Hannan with the bases loaded to tie it.
Brandon Caipen walked on four straight pitches to start the 12th and advanced on Diedrich's sacrifice. After an intentional walk to Justin Banks, Parks hit the first pitch just inside the left field line to score Caipen.
UW-Milwaukee starter Aaron Sorenson allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six before giving way to Tim Hoy with one out and one on in the ninth. Dolske suffered the loss, allowing one run on five hits and three walks in three innings.
Early lead
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the third when Mike Goetz capped a three-hit inning with an RBI single to left center. Dan Buchholz led off the inning with a single, and his pinch runner Jeremy Wilson advanced to third on Matt Curran's single. Goetz then posted one of his three hits to plate Wilson.
Hannan tied the score in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left for his second home run of the season, but Sorenson only yielded only two more hits before handing the game over to Dolske in the ninth.
The Panthers reclaimed the lead in the seventh when Ross McCoy hit a leadoff double and scored one batter later on Zak Rivera's single. Joe Nowicki then singled in Goetz in the eighth to put UWM up 3-1.
Shortstop Lou Gattozzi and Charles Schultz, who came on as a pinch hitter each had two hits to lead the YSU attack. The Panthers out-hit the Penguins 12-10.
YSU led 2-0 in the fourth inning of Saturday's second game, which was not completed in time for today's edition.
The two teams were scheduled to wind up the three-game series today at 1 p.m. at Cene Park.
