Man indicted in rape, murder of baby niece
CANTON (AP) -- A man has been indicted on rape, murder and child endangering charges in the death of his 7-month-old niece.
A Stark County grand jury returned the indictment Thursday against Henry A. Sunderman, 32, of Canton, in the March 10 death of Zoey Sunderman.
Chryssa Hartnett, an assistant Stark County prosecutor, declined to detail circumstances in the death.
The victim died while she and three siblings were in their uncle's care at her suburban Waynesburg home. Sunderman told police that the baby stopped breathing.
Some family members have said Sunderman would not have harmed the girl and said she might have been injured while Sunderman tried to revive her.
Sunderman remained jailed Friday and could not be reached to comment. A message seeking comment from him or a family member was left at a Canton phone number listed under his name.
