Fitch track places sixth



West Branch's track teams did well in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference meet.
MASSILLON -- Fitch seniors Sam Cassano (discus) and Adam Kagarise (400 meters) won events and Ross Lenehan finished second in the 1600 to lead Fitch to a sixth-place finish in the eight-team Federal League track and field meet Friday at Massillon Jackson High School.
Boardman's Brandon Rader won the shot put, Evan Klepec finished second in the discus and the Spartans' 4x800 relay team of Rick Lape, A.J. Frank, Matt Moore and Jake Lape finished second. Boardman finished seventh and Massillon Perry was first.
On the girls side, Boardman's Breanne Romeo finished second in the 400 to lead the Spartans to a third-place finish.
Finishing third for the Spartans were Lauren Agnew (800), Genna Higbee (300 hurdles), Corey Carter (high jump) and Carrie Mavrikis (pole vault).
Boardman's 4x100 relay of Samara Sutton, Danille Burin, Becca Sammartino and Maria Mooney also finished third.
Alexis Hall won the discus and placed fifth in the shot as Fitch's girls placed sixth. Canton GlenOak placed first.
NBC track
BELOIT -- West Branch's girls finished second and the Warriors' boys were third in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference meet at Clinton Heacock Stadium.
West Branch's girls scored 95 points to finish behind Marlington (120).
Megan Diehl of the Warriors won the 100 (13.65) and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay (52.50), with Amy Chumney, Karen Steiger and Alyssa Bowman.
Bowman also won the 100 hurdles (16.12).
Also winning for West Branch was Casey Benner in the high jump (5-2) and the 4x200 relay (1:50.6) of Laura Scott, Steiger, Natassia Brown and Kelly Morckel.
In the boys competition, Alliance won the team title with 111 points, while Marlington finished second (72) and West Branch third (71).
Jim Boals was the Warriors' only winner, claiming the discus (159-6).
Curtis Leuenberger of Louisville won the 100 (11.16), 200 (22.6) and 400 (52.4).
Tennis
CANTON -- As expected, Boardman High's Scott Warden advanced to the district meet in singles, as did the Spartans' doubles team of Robert Salcedo and Chris Leson.
Warden won two matches Thursday, losing only three games in the process, and will play second-seeded Alan McCausland of Green in the semifinals today. Jackson's Alex Hosner, the top seed, and No. 4 seed Drew Bolender are in the other semifinal.
Salcedo and Leson also lost just three games in two matches Thursday, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Canfield's Joe Nagy and Bal Singh in the quarterfinals.
Salcedo and Leson, the third seeds, will play No. 2 seeds Jimmy Jeffries and Caue' Ferreira of GlenOak in the semifinals.
The other semifinalists are from North Canton Hoover and Louisville.
Baseball
BERLIN CENTER -- Billy Couchenour pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks and also slammed two singles and drove in two runs to pace Columbiana to a 10-0 win over Western Reserve in a Div. IV sectional final Friday.
Mike Welce chipped in with two singles and one RBI and Ryan Wiliams added a two-run double to reinforce the Clippers (13-13-1), who advanced to a district semifinal at Cene Park.
Western Reserve is 12-12.
East Palestine 16, Southern 0
SALINEVILLE -- David Baker hit a three-run homer as East Palestine routed Southern in a Tri-County League game.
Zac Dunn also homered, and added a single and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (19-4, 8-3 TCL). Chris Linert singled twice and had three RBIs, and Nick Baiamonte and Trent Mohney both singled twice.
Four East Palestine pitchers combined on a no-hitter.
Softball
NILES -- Kari Thompson had three hits, including a double and a triple, to lead Poland past Niles 5-1 in a Metro Athletic Conference softball game.
Allie Patton and Ashley Conger each added two hits for the Bulldogs (20-3, 12-1), whose lone remaining league game is against Canfield, which also has one loss in the conference. Liz Maher (9-1) struck out four in four shutout innings for the Bulldogs.
