CAMPUS NOTES In the spotlight



KENT STATE UNIVERSITY
Patrick V. Kerrigan of Youngstown has been inducted into Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor fraternity. He is earning both a master's degree in justice studies and doctorate in public policy. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor's degree in government and Akron University Law School with a juris doctor degree.
OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
Four local students were inducted into the Mabel G. Freeman Chapter of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society. They are: Matt Fulmer of Austintown, a criminology/international studies major; Dan Klempay of Austintown, a political science/communication major; Sameh Elguizaoui of Canfield, a biology major; and Amanda Williams of Canfield, a communications major. Mortar Board recognizes contributions to humanity through national coalitions. The OSU chapter was founded in 1914.
DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, GREENCASTLE, Ind.
Kelton Moreland Person of Tibbetts-Wick Road, Girard, was selected to participate in the Information Technology Associates Program during the 2005-06 school year. Working with DePauw faculty and IT staff members, selected first-year students spend an average of eight to 10 hours per week experimenting with IT advancements and are paid for their work.
ALBION COLLEGE, ALBION, Mich.
Amy Naramore, a daughter of Pamela Hilles of Beloit, presented a project, "Body Image and Self-Esteem among Elementary School Girls," during the annual Elkin R. Isaac Student Research Symposium in April. She also received the Barbara Putnam Smith Award in Natural Resources and a President Bernard T. Lomas "Project 250" Award at the annual honors convocation, which recognizes academic excellence.
BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE, BEREA
Michael Finamore of Boardman was awarded the Edward Cramer & amp; Diane Fletcher White Family Endowment, and Phillip E. Kerlin of North Lima received the Harold A. and Louise Cramer White Prize for Excellence in Education at the recent annual Honor's Day ceremony at Baldwin-Wallace College, and Jessica Banks of Boardman was presented with the Outstanding Junior Award by the B-W Conservatory Women's Committee. The endowment is given to an outstanding student who will be entering medical school. Finamore, son of Archie and Angela Finamore, is a 2002 graduate of Boardman High School and a biology major. He plays on the varsity football team and is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Dayton C. Miller Honor Society. He will attend Ohio University's College of Osteopathic Medicine next year.
The Excellence in Education prize is given to a junior education major, based on academic achievement, contributions to the department and potential in the field. Kerlin was also inducted into the Dayton C. Miller Honor Society. Kerlin, a son of Peter and Roberta Kerlin, is a 2003 graduate of Amherst Steele High School and a junior history secondary education major. He is president of Teaching Together, a leader for Campus Crusade Bible study and is vice president of Kappa Delta Pi Education honor society. He also recently traveled to Seoul, South Korea, as one of 25 delegates from eastern Ohio to the World Methodist Conference. Banks, daughter of Ellen Wakeford Banks and Michael Banks of Boardman, is a double major in music eduction and flute.
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE, NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.
Stafanie Romeo, a junior history and economics major, has been named the winner of the 2006 David W. Edward Entrepreneurship Scholarship Competition. The competition requires students to prepare and present a business plan depicting the creation of a new business project, service or some combination of the three. Romeo's business plan detailed the creation of a new product line of stackable trays to help preserve, transport and store food inside larger food storage containers. Her business plan addressed product design, production strategy, market evaluation and competitive environment, product marketing, key management and cash flow and profit projections. Romeo is the daughter of David and Devina Romeo of Bessemer and a graduate of Mohawk Area High School.
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER
Raymond Gaines, a sophomore from Burghill, has been named recipient of the Morris Volunteer Service Award in recognition of his leadership and dedication to helping others in ways that "significantly and favorably impact society." Gaines was the student coordinator for a program that provided volunteers for Lincoln Way Elementary School's Ohio Reads program, matching college students and other volunteers with elementary school children to work on reading and language arts skills.
MALONE COLLEGE, CANTON
Five area students were recently inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda national honor society for nontraditional students. The honorees are: Robin L. Heinz of North Cross Street, Columbiana; Timothy T. Needham of Dover Road, Youngstown; Heidi M. Katabi of Scott Street, Newton Falls; Kristine D. Wilson of Vienna and Mary R. Valko of Hunters Glen, Boardman.
JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY, CLEVELAND
Beth Anne McClure, daughter of Linda and Larry McClure of Struthers, has been awarded the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, which will provide her with tuition and a stipend for three years of graduate study. She graduates from John Carroll this month with honors as a comprehensive chemistry major with a physics minor. She received the Clare Booth Luce Scholarship, which covered the cost of her junior and senior years at John Carroll as well as summer research stipends. She was awarded the Edmund B. Thomas Chemistry Scholarship and the Rev. George J. Pickel, S.J. Senior Chemistry Award at John Carroll and has been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and Iota Sigma Pi Honor Society for Women in Chemistry. She was valedictorian for the Struthers High School class of 2002. She plans to attend Ohio University to pursue a doctorate in physical chemistry.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE AND MIAMI (OF OHIO) UNIVERSITIES
Patrick Alexander of Youngstown and Angela Marie Kwallek of Ravenna have been presented with an Award of Excellence by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for the 2006-07 academic year. Alexander, son of Dale and Dwendolyn Alexander, is a senior at Miami and intends to pursue a doctorate in English and African-American literature at Duke University. Kwallek, daughter of Norman and Linda Kwallek, is a senior at Youngstown State University and plans to pursue a juris doctorate at the University of Toledo College of Law. The honor was presented to only 40 college students nationwide.
