BETTER TEACHING
Better teaching
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University is getting $1 million to create professional development programs for math and science public school teachers. The money is coming from the National Science Foundation Mathematics Science Partnership Program and will target 47 school districts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. The goal is to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in grades three through 10 and science in grades five through 10.
Clean Sweep Week
BOARDMAN -- Clean Sweep Week begins Monday in the township. Business and property owners along main corridors are being asked to spend time sweeping driveways, edging and sidewalks. Place debris in the street along the curb, or throw it away. The Ohio Department of Transportation will clean U.S. Route 224 and Market Street, beginning next week. Clean Sweep Week officially begins at 10 a.m., with a kickoff at the Market Street-Midlothian Boulevard site of the new public library parking lot. Township trustees and other officials will attend.
Dellick appointed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Judge Theresa Dellick of Mahoning County Juvenile Court has been appointed to the Ohio Judicial Conference Advisory Group. She and Judge William Weaver of Lake County Juvenile Court represent Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges. They and other advisory group members will work with Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program to provide confidential assistance to judges who experience problems such as substance abuse, mental health, stress or judicial temperament, any of which could lead to disciplinary violations. Judge Dellick also is a trustee of Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges board.
Jenkins seeks release
WARREN -- David Jenkins, the former Harding High girls basketball coach convicted in March of killing his wife, Deana, has asked the appeals court for the opportunity to be released from jail on bond. Jenkins' attorney, Michael A. Partlow of Cleveland, has filed essentially the same request of the 11th District Court of Appeals that he asked of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Peter Kontos. Kontos turned down the request. LuWayne Annos, assistant Trumbull County prosecutor, said the prosecutor's office will oppose Jenkins' release this time just as it did before on the grounds that a convicted felon is a flight risk.
Annos said it is rare for an appellate court to grant such releases, at least on cases that originate in Trumbull County. Jenkins was sentenced to 15 years to life after being convicted of murder. Partlow appealed that sentence to the appeals court and asks in his court filing that bond be set for Jenkins until that appeal is heard.
Stolen phones probed
AUSTINTOWN -- The Cellular One store on Mahoning Avenue reported to police that 55 phones are missing from inventory. The district manager told police the phones were discovered missing after an inventory count was taken earlier this month. The manager said store officials have been told someone is selling the phones from the trunk of a car. Police are investigating.
