Police probe crash that left 2 people injured
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- The New Castle station of the Pennsylvania State Police is investigating a crash that injured two city residents.
Police said emergency personnel used ropes and pulleys to rescue Donna Cookson, 62, and Elsie Cookson, 2, from their Plymouth Voyager after it slid backward over a 75-foot embankment and came to rest on its roof, partially in the Beaver River. Police didn't know whether the two were related.
A nursing supervisor at Ellwood City Hospital said the victims were in guarded condition Thursday night in the hospital's emergency room.
Police said Ryan Nauman, no age available, of Ellwood City, stopped at the stop sign at Pa. Route 488 at River Road around 7:20 p.m. and thought the van driven by Donna Cookson was going to turn right onto River Road, so he pulled into the intersection. Cookson's van struck Nauman's car and traveled across the road, then went backward over the embankment. Police said Nauman was not injured.
