Drugs found in house
YOUNGSTOWN -- Five guns, spent casings and drugs were found in a car when police checked out a report of gunfire at 443 Crandall Ave. around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Inside the house, police found drug paraphernalia, suspected marijuana and Methadone pills. No suspects were inside. A loaded assault rifle magazine was found near a neighbor's driveway. Three teenage boys standing near the car were questioned and given gunshot residue tests before being released. About 30 minutes earlier, police received calls about juveniles jumping in front of cars on Fifth Avenue near Tod Lane. A man who lives in the 200 block of Tod told police that several boys damaged his wooden fence when they jumped it at 7:50 p.m.
Significant fire damage
YOUNGSTOWN -- Significant fire damage to a vacant house at 1025 State St. has prompted the fire department to recommend that it be demolished. Fire crews were sent to the house around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Bartender robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The bartender at Jitso's on McGuffey Road was robbed at gunpoint by a man who walked in around 8 p.m. Wednesday wearing a ski mask and hoodie, police said. The bartender said the gun was stuck in her left side and she was forced to open the register. The robber left with $250 and a digital camera that had been on the bar and drove off in a GMC Jimmy, reports show.
Thieves take comforter
BOARDMAN -- An employee at a Doral Drive discount store told police that a man pulled a gun on her as she tried to stop him from removing items from the store. The employee told police that at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, a man and a woman were in Wal-Mart, loading items into a shopping cart. The woman left a few minutes before the man, who was pushing the cart without paying for the items inside of it. The woman told police that she followed the two to the parking lot to their car. When she attempted to stop them, the man said he had a gun. She grabbed the cart, and he pulled a handgun. The thieves got into their car with a $100 comforter, leaving the remaining items, valued about more than $500, in the cart.
11-year-old arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 11-year-old East Philadelphia Avenue girl who police said shouted obscenities and tried to kick, bite and punch a deputy U.S. marshal was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center to face charges of assault on a peace officer and obstructing official business. Police said the girl interfered Wednesday afternoon in the arrest of 29-year-old Kendra Harper, also of East Philadelphia, who was wanted on warrants that charge disorderly conduct and inciting to violence. A new charge of resisting arrest was added after Harper hid in a closet at her home and struggled with police, reports show.
Mosquito spraying
NILES -- Mosquito spraying will be done after 6 p.m. Wednesday. If it rains, the alternate spraying is Thursday. Residents with respiratory ailments should remain indoors with the windows closed. Food should not be prepared or left outside during the spraying, and pets should be taken indoors.
Health and Safety Day
BOARDMAN -- A Health and Safety Day will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Boardman Government Center, 8299 Market St. An array of health screenings from blood pressure checks to bone density will be offered for free. Numerous health-related businesses will pass out information and answer questions. Qualified child safety-seat installers will check and install car seats, and children's fingerprinting also will be done. The smoke trailer, emergency management vehicles and others will be available for tours.
Farmer's death probed
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana County Coroner's Office is investigating the death of an area farmer about 10 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities said Robert Brubaker, 63, of Kelly Park Road, was found under a disc harrow, a piece of equipment used to plow fields, in a field in Fairfield Township. He was found by a worker he had hired. The coroner's office is trying to determine if he had a medical problem first, such as a heart attack, or just fell under the disc harrow.
Program canceled
BOARDMAN -- The Planets in the Park program set for 8 to 10 p.m. today in Boardman Park has been canceled because of inclement weather.
