Camera phone helps for parking
Dear Heloise: I teach at a university. Because I can end up parking at one of 10 or 12 lots, it's easy to forget where I parked. My solution is to use my camera phone to take a photo of where the car is parked. When I head out at the end of the day, I simply look at my photo. This applies to mall and event parking as well. Walter, it was a treat chatting with you recently. I've visited your charming city and have great memories of fly-fishing there. Knowing you have contact with many college students, I'd love to hear from them. Need a hint from Heloise about laundry, cleaning or cooking? How about a hint to Heloise for other college students? I'll pick several hints to print, and those students will receive a Heloise coffee mug and a set of pamphlets. E-mail to: HeloiseCollege@Heloise.com, or write to: Heloise/College, P.O. Cultured marble
Dear Readers: It's a pretty good substitute for real marble, but like the real thing, cultured marble is not damage-proof. Here are some dos and don'ts to protect it:
Avoid abrasive scouring powders, which will scratch the finish. Instead, use a nonabrasive spray or foam cleaner, or baking soda and water.
Avoid setting hot items like curling or flat irons, plates, etc., directly on cultured marble. They can scar and even melt the glossy finish.
Nail-polish remover can also cause severe damage.
Usually, scratches, chips and minor blemishes can be fixed. A certified repair person can re-buff the surface with a special mixed gel-coat compound. Heloise
Dear Heloise: I have a great hint for travelers like myself, as I am visiting the States right now. Instead of buying a new toothpaste tube in each city or having to bring and then return with a mostly full tube, just save the end of one of your tubes at home and take that tube with you. This will save you money, and you won't have to worry about having to bring it home with you! Cheers from Poland! Bruce Jankowski, via e-mail
Dear Heloise: Fresh strawberries seem to deteriorate rather quickly when they are allowed to touch one another in the store packaging. Therefore, to extend their life and freshness, use a no-longer-needed egg carton. Place one strawberry per egg space of the carton and store in the fridge. Do not wash until ready to eat. You'll be amazed. Rene W., Bella Vista, Ark.
Dear Heloise: I have numerous two-disk CDs, and it was always a tad irritating to figure out which way they opened to get to the second CD. I've found that putting arrows pointing to the direction they open saves quite a lot of frustration. I use typewriter correction fluid. Sharon in California
