NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township trustees have accepted the resignation of Jean Dougherty as part-time assistant zoning inspector. They hired Robert Ferguson to replace her. He will be paid $9.50 an hour and work 20 hours a week, starting Monday. Dougherty resigned April 24 to return to a previous, full-time job.
Stabbing reported
CAMPBELL -- A 26-year-old Murray Avenue man was stabbed at 11:32 p.m. Monday after trying to break up a verbal argument between two women, one of whom was his girlfriend. He left the scene after being unable to defuse the argument and a short time later was confronted by a boyfriend of the other woman. A fight ensued in the vicinity of Murray and Jean streets, and the victim was stabbed but doesn't know by whom. He sought treatment at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police are investigating and have statements from witnesses.
Allied plans cleanup
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Customers of Allied Waste Services should put out large items for pickup May 17 and 18. As in the past, no tires, refrigeration units, concrete, paint, hazardous waste, tree limbs over 36 inches long or 7 inches wide or batteries will be picked up. Village officials said other waste collection companies serving the village have not scheduled special spring cleanup days.
Office releases audits
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio auditor's office has released audits of the Salem and Southern school districts and the Columbiana Metropolitan Housing Authority. All three audits were for a one-year period beginning July 1, 2004. State auditors did not find any citations or findings for recovery in any of the audits. The village has been recognized as being a "Tree City USA" for 15 years.
Training completed
MINERAL RIDGE -- Randall Pugh, Weathersfield Township fire chief, said six firefighters have completed classes to be hazardous-material technicians. Pugh said this is the top level of training for hazardous-material handling, and is at the stage where the firefighters will actually suit up in special gear and go into a hazardous-materials site.
Inspecting fire hydrants
HOWLAND -- The fire department has begun inspecting about 600 fire hydrants in the township, a process that could take two to three months. Residents may experience some water discoloration.
'Tribute to the Troops'
YOUNGSTOWN -- Summit Academy Elementary School will have a "Tribute to the Troops" at 6 p.m. Friday at the school at 144 N. Schenley Ave. The program will feature a memorial, "Gone, But Never Forgotten," to honor those men and women who have lost their lives in the recent war. All families and friends of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana county military personnel are invited to attend. Members of the military and veterans are asked to wear their uniforms so they can be recognized.
Collecting waste
CANFIELD -- Mahoning County residents can safely dispose of household hazardous materials 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Canfield Fairgrounds. The Mahoning County Commissioners' Reuse and Recycling Division will collect household hazardous waste, with traffic into the fairgrounds through Gate 9 off state Route 46. Tires and explosives will not be accepted. The Green Team will accept pesticides, insecticides, used motor oil, poisons, solvents, gasoline, car batteries, aerosol cans, antifreeze, propane cylinders, grease, fluorescent light bulbs and household cleaners.
Funds for KSU campus
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The State Controlling Board has approved $150,000 for renovations to Kent State's East Liverpool Campus. The campus will use the money to improve its 90-year-old main classroom building, including the renovation of nine classrooms, officials said .
