Police: Felon had gun
YOUNGSTOWN -- A gun was found in the car of a man on probation for robbery who was driving without a valid license the wrong way on a one-way street, police said. Melvin Green, 48, of Hammaker Street, was arraigned Tuesday in municipal court on charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, illegal possession of a weapon, driving under suspension and disobeying rules for one-way streets. Bond was set at $27,500, and a preliminary hearing will be May 17. Police said Green drove west on Oakwood Avenue, which is restricted to eastbound traffic, around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. A gun was found under the front seat, reports show.
Criminal-tools charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Edward E. Newsome, 31, of Wilcox Street was arrested near the Medicine Shoppe on Mahoning Avenue after police checked out a report of someone trying to break into the place around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. Newsome was standing near the drive-through window. In his pockets police said they found two screwdrivers, channel locks, a wrench, glass cutter, paint brush, putty knife and hammer. Newsome was charged with possession of criminal tools. Bond was set at $10,000 at his arraignment Tuesday in municipal court.
Facts needed for grant
BOARDMAN -- Township Trustee Kathy Miller said trustees will be collecting demographic information from residents of a section of Aylesboro Avenue this week to apply for a grant. Miller said the section runs from Market Street to Glendale Avenue. The information is necessary for the township to apply for a federal Community Development Block Grant to install storm sewers in the neighborhood and solve some flooding problems.
Robber wore disguise
NILES -- A mustached man posing as a woman is being sought in the robbery of National Cash Advance, 6285 Youngstown-Warren Road. Police said the robber -- wearing a wig and carrying a purse -- escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Manslaughter sentence
WARREN -- A Leavittsburg man is sentenced to one year in prison on manslaughter and assault convictions. Jason Airwyke, 29, of 325 S. Leavitt Road, was sentenced Tuesday in the Trumbull County Common Pleas courtroom of Judge Andrew Logan. He was convicted in April of punching Jeff Smith in the parking lot of the Villa Madrid tavern on Parkman Road Nov. 6, 2004. Authorities said Smith, 44, died the day after the 5 a.m. fight of severe head trauma. Part of Airwyke's sentence was to make restitution to Smith's family. The amount of restitution was not available.
Lunch prices increased
CORTLAND -- Lunches at Lakeview schools will cost more next year. The Lakeview school board Monday said the cost of lunch will increase from $1.75 to $2 at the high school for the 2006-07 school year. At Lakeview Middle School, the cost of lunch will be $1.75, up from $1.50. Pupils' lunches will cost $1.65, an increase of 25 cents, at Cortland and Bazetta elementary schools. Milk will cost 10 cents more, 50 cents.
2 trees to be planted
LEETONIA -- The Leetonia Shade Tree Commission will have its annual Arbor Day observance in Wick Park at 5 p.m. Thursday. The commission will plant a red oak tree donated by Ohio Edison and a red sunset red maple tree bought by the village.
