Canfield regroups behind Bettura, 8-1
Liz Maher and Jenna Medina combined to pitch a no-hitter for Poland's 7-0 win.
CANFIELD -- One day after its toughest loss of the season, the Canfield High softball team scored four runs in the first inning, then cruised past Howland, 8-1.
Tricia Bettura (7-2) pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts to pick up the win for the Cardinals (17-3, 7-1 Metro Athletic Conference.
Brittany Danilov hit a single and home run and scored twice for the Cards. Rachel Melewski hit a pair of singles, scored once and stole a base.
Canfield, which lost to Poland on Monday, 1-0, has one loss in conference play as do the Bulldogs. A date for their rematch has not yet been announced.
Howland slipped to 20-6, 10-3.
Poland 7, Struthers 0
STRUTHERS -- Liz Maher and Jenna Medina combined to toss a no-hitter for the Bulldogs (18-3, 11-1 MAC). They faced one batter over the minimum as Maher struck out eight batters over four innings..
Maher's two hits drove in two runs and included a double. Jenna Susany had three hits that brought home two runners. One was a double.
Allie Patton's two hits included a double. She scored twice and had two RBIs. Also with two hits was Ciera Urichich.
For Struthers (13-10, 7-6), Dom Martino and Katie Edwards walked.
Lakeview 2, Liberty 1
CORTLAND -- With one out in the seventh inning, Lakeview's Jen Baker and Michelle Antonelli. Reliever Michelle Dykes then faced Chelsea Butler, who doubled home Baker with the deciding run.
The win gives the Bulldogs (18-3, 12-2) a share of the Trumbull Athletic Conference crown. LaBrae (10-2 TAC) can tie for the league crown if the Vikings defeat Newton Falls and Hubbard.
Liberty (7-13, 4-10) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ashley Hackett doubled, stole third and scored on an overthrow.
Antonelli's fifth-inning single scored Angela DiCesare to tie the game in the fifth inning.
Boardman 8, Canton McKinley 4
BOARDMAN -- Makala Gasparek slugged a solo home run and single while Jamie Amero and Kelsey Ford each rapped two-run doubles.
Justine Cullen had a single and two RBIs while Nicole Williams contributed a double, single and one RBI to aid the Spartans (8-11, 1-6 Federal League).
Shannon Morrow got her first mound win of the season with relief help from Williams, Ford and Jocelyn Hudak.
Brina Maydock had two doubles and one RBI and Gina Pirolozzi a double, single and one RBI for McKinley (11-10 and 2-5 Federal League).
Beaver Local 9, Campbell 2
CAMPBELL -- L'lee Zimmerman pitched a two-hitter as Beaver Local scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to sew up the win over Campbell (3-16).
Canton South 10, West Branch 2
CANTON -- Nicki Irwin homered and drove in two runs for Canton South (17-6, 9-3 Northeastern Buckeye Conference). Irwin and Emily Weitoszek each had two hits. Sarah Becker scattered seven hits to improve to 11-2.
Bri Benedict hit two doubles for the Warriors (8-17, 1-12).
Southeast 7, Norton 6
RAVENNA -- The Pirates (10-13) rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings.
Boardman 4, Western Reserve 2
BERLIN CENTER -- The Spartans (9-11) rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to prevail on Monday.
Samantha Peter hit a home run and single to pace the Spartans. Mallory Hay hit three singles.
McKenzie Mowery hit a home runs and two singles to spark the Blue Devils (17-5).
