BASEBALL Keller, O'Brien spark Boardman's 4-3 win
Howland, Western Reserve and Springfield won league contests.
BOARDMAN -- Corey Keller had the big hit and Richie O'Brien turned in a quality start Tuesday as the Boardman High baseball team defeated Massillon Jackson, 4-3.
Keller hit a bases-loaded, three-RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Spartans (17-7, 7-3 Federal League) a 4-1 lead.
O'Brien (5-1) yielded just one run in five innings. Despite allowing the Polar Bears two runs in the sixth inning, Corey Susany recorded his fifth save.
In a 12-hit attack, Joe Iaccabucci collected four singles and Armani Johnson doubled twice.
Canton GlenOak 12, Fitch 8
AUSTINTOWN -- Fitch led 8-7 heading into the top of the seventh before Canton GlenOak scored five runs to take control of the Federal League game.
Matt Truax had four singles for GlenOak (8-14, 2-8 FL).
Of Fitch's 13 hits, senior Dave Diyorio and junior Mike Dota had three hits apiece. Diyorio also knocked in three runs, while Joe Koch, a junior, added two hits for the Falcons (12-10, 3-8).
Howland 13, Salem 5
HOWLAND -- Manoli Pahoulis, Tony Pozega and Ryan Kellar each had two hits for the Tigers (15-8, 10-3 Metro Athletic Conference). One of Pozega's hits was a double.
For the Quakers (12-13, 4-9), Ben Miller doubled and Craig McElroy had three hits.
Western Reserve 6, Sebring 4
BERLIN CENTER -- A six-run sixth inning rallied the Blue Devils from a 4-0 deficit.
Sebring jumped out to its lead with the help of Jon Springer's RBI single in the fourth and Matt Kerns' three-run homer in the sixth.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, Western Reserve's (12-11, 7-7 Inter-County League) Dave Snowden's hit a three-run double and Jerod Barker and Jeff Zatchok had RBI singles.
Springfield 16, Mineral Ridge 6
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Tigers (21-6, 13-1 ICL) sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored 12 runs, with Dane Dobson hitting a single and double.
Dobson finished with a double and two singles and drove in five runs. John Houser hit two double and a single and Todd Kibby hit a double and two singles.
Josh Garland hit a double and two single to spark the Rams.
South Range 10, Lowellville 1
STRUTHERS -- The teams had 16 hits -- all singles -- in the ICL game.
Joey Leson had five RBIs for South Range, whose pitchers, Steve Bensinger and Codey Deal, combined on a four-hitter.
Leson, Tom DeChellis, Deal and Jeff Pilcher had two hits apiece for the Raiders.
John Wilaj reached base three times for Lowellville.
Youngstown Christian 15,Lutheran East 1
CANFIELD -- Ed Gonda had two doubles while Nathan Setnick and Josh Bell had a double and triple apiece in the five-inning East Suburban Conference game.
Gonda struck out eight of the 11 batters he faced in 3 1/3 innings for the Eagles (7-10, 1-7 ESC). Gonda and reliever Jack Mocker combined on a one-hitter.
Kirk Dyle had the lone hit for Lutheran East (0-9).
Struthers 10, Campbell 9,8 innings
STRUTHERS -- Bryan Stanko's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Struthers into a 9-9 tie, then Dennis Walton scored from second base on an error to give the Wildcats the win at Cene Park Monday.
Steve Streb and fifth-inning reliever Mike Barone combined to pitch a four-hitter with five strikeouts.
Chris Cadvan had three singles and two RBIs while Walton had two doubles and one RBI to pace Struthers.
For Campbell, Rich Tisone, Lonnie McQueen and Nico Magnolia each had a hit.
