Howland edges Niles to remain alive in MAC
Mooney edged Edison to win its 20th game, tying the school record.
HOWLAND -- The Howland High softball team, with two outs in the seventh inning, scored the only run of the game as it posted a 1-0 victory over Niles in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
With two outs, Rachel Bixler doubled and moved to second on a groundout. Desiree Sibera singled Bixler home.
Abby Nicholas (10-3) pitched a completed game with four strikeouts to pick up the win.
The Tigers still have a shot at the MAC title. They must defeat Canfield today and then hope the Cardinals defeat Poland.
Mooney 5, Edison 4
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cardinals (20-6), who scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, tied the school record for most wins in a season set in 2004.
Mooney also has 14 straight winning seasons, which includes 76 wins the past four years.
In the seventh inning, Mooney's Monique Irwin singled and Veronica Skowron reached first when Edison's (12-11) catcher was charged with interference.
Sarah Pelini was intentionally walked to load the bases. After Irwin was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice, Kelcie Herberger singled home Cheryl Guyer, who was pinch-running for Skowron, with the deciding run.
Mooney, behind 4-2, tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning as Sarah Pelini pinch hit a triple. Gina Fabian singled her home. Fabian stole second and with two outs, Katie Hughes singled Fabian home.
Katie Hughes and Herberger had two hits apiece for the Cardinals.
Struthers 15, Campbell 5
CAMPBELL -- Stephanie Sahli tripled and Sara Salinas doubled for the Wildcats.
Victoria Steiner doubled for the Red Devils (3-15, 1-11 MAC).
Salem 16, E. Liverpool 2
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Brittany Gregory hit a grand slam, Bridget Szabat tripled and Mikenzie Clark, Stephanie Szabat and Abi Seguin doubled for the Quakers (9-11).
Gregory (9-10) held the Potters to four hits. Salem led just 3-2 after five innings.
Beaver Local 12, Chaney 2
LISBON -- The Beavers (16-12) scored four runs in the third inning and three in the fifth and sixth innings in its victory.
Chaney (3-13) was paced by Mary Wheland with two singles.
Lakeview 5, Liberty 0
LIBERTY -- Abbey Bensing (8-1) struck out 14 for the Bulldogs (17-3, 11-2 Trumbull Athletic Conference). Lauren Whetzel and Joanna Novotny each had two hits while Michelle Antonelli doubled.
For Liberty (7-12, 4-9), Michelle Dykes tripled and Melissa Dykes had the Leopards' other two hits.
Today, Liberty plays at Lakeview. A Bulldogs' victory would give them a share of the TAC crown with LaBrae.
Hubbard 5, Brookfield 0
HUBBARD -- Winning pitcher Gabby Flynn's three hits included a double and led the Eagles (12-8, 7-4 TAC). She struck out seven batters but walked 11. Kim Budd had two hits.
For the Warriors (2-18, 2-12), Maggie Marimon and Rachel Baker had hits.
