Fire department fights blazes
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city fire department responded to two house fires.
A fire was set at 259 Gaither Ave., a vacant house, the fire department said. Firefighters were sent to the South Side house at 3:50 a.m. Monday and found heavy fire on the second floor when they arrived. Damage was set at $2,000.
For safety reasons, a vacant house at 8 Illinois Ave. on the North Side was allowed to burn down early Sunday, reports show. Firefighters found the two-story structure engulfed in flames when they arrived at 4:35 a.m.
