Carbon monoxide release forces store to close

YOUNGSTOWN -- A Sheetz Inc. corporate official praised the Youngstown Fire Department's efforts on Sunday, after the Salt Springs Road convenience store was closed part of Saturday and Sunday because of a release of carbon monoxide.
The 24-hour store reopened around 8 p.m. Sunday.
Mark Wilson, director of store support, said the company got the go-ahead to reopen from the Ohio State Fire Marshal's office. Wilson lauded the YFD for professionalism and quick response when employees complained of feeling ill Saturday afternoon. One employee was treated at a local hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning.
Wilson said the store reopened Saturday, but closed after a few hours when odors were again detected. Wilson said Sheetz Inc. sent an environmental consultant to the store and a vapor extraction system was installed.
He said officials are still trying to determine the cause of the carbon monoxide release, but said the vapor extraction system was installed because the vapors are coming from under the building.
