Springfield, Ursuline sweep
The Tigers took a pair from Girard while the Irish defeated St. Thomas Aquinas.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Andy Richey and Chris Martin each had two hits Saturday to lead the Springfield High baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Girard.
The Tigers (19-6) made it a sweep when Martin and Dane Dobson each had two hits in a 9-8 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, winning pitcher Jeremy Savaet improved to 9-0, striking out five batters and walking one. Martin drove in two of Springfield's runs and freshman Todd Kibby struck out the side in the seventh inning. One of Richey's hits was a double.
For the Indians, R.J. Trimbur had three hits including two doubles and drove in both runs..
In the second game, winning pitcher Dobson (1-1) had two hits and two RBIs. Martin also had two hits including a double plus a RBI.
Trimbur's big day continued with two hits and three RBIs. Brett Cubellis doubled for the Indians.
Ursuline 16-10,St. Thomas 6-0
STRUTHERS -- The Ursuline High School baseball team collected 22 hits as it defeated Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas twice at Cene Park.
Eddie Rohan went 4-for-6 with a double on the day for the Irish (17-4).
In the opener, David Patrick finished 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Ken Lapuschan had a three-run double.
Ryan Satterlee was 3-for-4 with four RBIs for Ursuline and, in the nightcap, Shawn Roman (2-1) held the Knights (5-14) to three hits.
East Palestine 7, Youngstown Christian 3
EAST PALESTINE -- Steve Mazza's three hits included a double while Pat Figley had two hits, two RBIs and three stolen bases for the Bulldogs (17-4).
Dan Hanolt and Chris Linert doubled as East Palestine broke the school record for victories.
For Youngstown Christian, Aaron Tate and Anthony Lagamba each had three hits.
Canfield 10, Niles 5
NILES -- Joe Fox homered and C.J. Morris and Andrew Turocy doubled for the Cardinals (18-5, 10-1 MAC).
Niles (16-5, 8-4) took a 2-1 lead after two innings, but the Cardinals had a three-run third and a four-run sixth to win it.
Canfield 6, Niles 2
CANFIELD -- In a game played Friday, winning pitcher Turocy (5-0) threw a five-hitter and added a homer and a double.
The game was knotted 2-2 in the fourth inning before Canfield finished strong.
