SOFTBALL First-inning bash gets Mooney off on right foot against Tigers
In Girard's 9-5 win over Campbell, Ashley Isoldi and Kim Turner paced the Indians.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Freshman Katie Hughes had a single and triple and three RBIs in the first inning Saturday as the Mooney High softball team defeated Springfield, 15-4, at Volney Rogers.
The Cardinals (19-6) had six hits during an offensively solid first inning.
Junior Monique Irwin had a single and triple and two RBIs for Mooney, whose roster has one senior, Gina Fabian. Fabian had a single and two RBIs and scored twice.
Losing pitcher Krista Snyder (14-2) had a double and Kristy Warren had two singles for the Tigers (16-7).
Liberty 11, Struthers 1
STRUTHERS -- Winning pitcher Brianna Palumbo doubled while Kacey Kurtz, Michelle Dykes and Sarah Stofko each drove in two runs for the Leopards (7-11).
Kurtz, Dykes, Stofko and Ashley Hackett each had two hits.
For Struthers (12-9), Sara Salinas doubled twice.
Girard 9, Campbell 5
CAMPBELL -- Freshman Ashley Isoldi's three hits scored two base runners for the Indians (5-19). Kim Turner doubled home three runs.
For the Red Devils, Deanna Black's two hits included a double and drove in two runs. Victoria Steiner and Delilah Benedis had two hits each.
Champion 2, Burton Berkshire 0
CHAMPION -- Kasey Karr had 13 strikeouts and walked one batter in a three-hitter for the Golden Flashes (14-6).
One Berkshire batter reached second base on a sacrifice bunt in the fourth.
Senior Emily Hayes had two of Champion's three hits, including a fourth-inning double. Hayes also had a single while Hillary Beachy, a senior, had the other hit for the Flashes.
Canfield 7, Akron Springfield 1
STOW -- Brittany Danilov had a home run and two singles and scored three times for Canfield in the Barney Ellis Tournament.
Defensively, the sophomore shortstop had a part in two double plays as both the putout and assist fielder.
Tricia Bettura also homered and had a single and Melissa West had a double and single.
Stow 2, Canfield 1
STOW -- Canfield committed two errors and losing pitcher Tricia Bettura (6-2) recorded seven strikeouts in the Barney Ellis Tournament in which Canfield won its flight.
Rachel Melewski tripled for the Cardinals (16-2), whose only two losses have been at the hands of Stow. Canfield's earlier loss this season was by a 4-1 score.
Stow's winning pitcher Lauren Hurd (9-3) had five strikeouts.
Struthers 12, East Liverpool 2
STRUTHERS -- Halle Minchin-Skook tripled and doubled for the Wildcats in the Metro Athletic Conference game Friday.
Ang Melchionne doubled and drove in two runs while Dom Martino had three RBIs for the Wildcats (12-8, 6-5).
Ellen Becker and Brittany Bovo teamed up for the pitching win.
Hubbard 13, Girard 9
GIRARD -- Corrie Gasser had three hits and scored twice in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game Friday.
Eagles with two hits were Jessica Lunt, Callie Oyler, Kim Budd, Stephanie Zubyk, Michelle Stipetich and Jamie Bowers.
For Girard, Aly Moliterno had three hits and two RBIs while Hillary Patterson, Sarah Britt and Kim Turner each had two hits each.
