MLB ROUNDUP | Friday's other games
Red Sox 6, Orioles 3
BOSTON -- Curt Schilling moved into a tie for the AL lead with his fifth win and David Ortiz put Boston ahead with a three-run double. Schilling (5-1) rebounded from his only loss of the season, allowing three runs and eight hits in seven innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter. Schilling didn't win his fifth game until Aug. 19 last season, when he was slowed by an injured right ankle. Ortiz, hitless in his previous 11 at-bats, cleared the bases in the four-run sixth when Boston took a 6-3 lead. It was his first hit since a three-run homer produced the final runs in Monday night's 7-3 win over the New York Yankees. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 12 opportunities. The game marked the return to Fenway Park for Kevin Millar, Boston's first baseman the past three seasons who left after the Red Sox declined to pursue him in free agency. He went 2-for-3 with a run but Baltimore lost its ninth straight game to Boston, including four this year. Besides Ortiz, two other players in big slumps got clutch hits in the decisive sixth inning. Alex Gonzalez began the inning 2-for-20 and Mark Loretta 5-for-30. With one out, Mike Lowell tied a career high with his third double of the game. He stayed at second when Wily Mo Pena grounded to shortstop, then stole third with Gonzalez at the plate. Gonzalez doubled him in to tie it at 3. Kevin Youkilis walked and Todd Williams replaced Rodrigo Lopez (1-4). Loretta popped a bunt toward third base that Melvin Mora barehanded but couldn't hold. The single loaded the bases for Ortiz, who lined a 3-2 pitch to right field for a bases-clearing double. Youkilis also hit his third homer of the season for Boston.
Blue Jays 13, Angels 3
TORONTO -- Russ Adams homered and drove in four runs for Toronto. Blue Jays catcher Bengie Molina went 1-for-4 in his first game against his former team. Angels starter Ervin Santana plunked Molina with a pitch in the fifth, prompting a smile from Bengie's brother Jose, the Angels' catcher. Troy Glaus went 3-for-4 in his first game against his former club, and the Blue Jays finished with 17 hits. Adams hit a three-run homer off Esteban Yan in the seventh. Frank Catalanotto also homered for the Blue Jays, who tied a season high for runs. Gustavo Chacin (5-1) allowed two runs and six hits in 51/3 innings, sending the Angels to their seventh loss in eight games. Santana (2-1) gave up six runs, nine hits and four walks in four innings.
Tigers 9, Twins 6
MINNEAPOLIS -- Magglio Ordonez, Craig Monroe and Brandon Inge homered as Detroit beat Minnesota for the fourth straight time. Kenny Rogers (5-2) allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings, winning for the fourth time in five starts, and Todd Jones pitched the ninth for his sixth save. Kyle Lohse (1-3) gave up seven runs and nine hits in four-plus innings.
Yankees 8, Rangers 7
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mike Mussina (5-1) allowed only three hits in seven-plus innings, Alex Rodriguez drove in three runs and New York ended Texas' six-game winning streak. The Yankees have won eight of 11. Vicente Padilla (3-2) Padilla struck out four and walked five while allowing seven runs -- four earned -- and six hits in 32/3 innings.
Royals 5, White Sox 4
CHICAGO -- Kerry Robinson had a go-ahead single off Bobby Jenks (1-1) in a four-run ninth as Kansas City rallied for its second straight road win. The Royals ended Chicago's 10-game home winning streak. Joe Crede's solo homer in the eighth off Elmer Dessens (2-1) put Chicago up 2-1, but White Sox relievers walked four in the ninth, when Matt Stairs capped the rally with a bases-loaded single.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Diamondbacks 7, Reds 1
PHOENIX -- Brandon Webb pitched eight sharp innings, Luis Gonzalez doubled and singled in a seven-run second inning and Arizona won its sixth straight game. Webb (5-0) gave up seven hits and one run. He struck out five, didn't walk a batter and lowered his ERA to 2.05. The Reds imploded in the second inning, giving up seven runs on five hits, three errors, two walks and a balk.
Cardinals 7, Marlins 2
MIAMI -- Albert Pujols hit his 16th home run, Jeff Suppan won his third consecutive start and St. Louis snapped a four-game losing streak. Playing in his team's 30th game, Pujols tied Cy Williams of the 1923 Philadelphia Phillies for the fewest games needed to reach 16 homers. His drive sparked a seven-run fifth inning for the Cardinals. Suppan (3-2) pitched 81/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs.
Mets 8, Braves 7, 14 innings
NEW YORK -- David Wright doubled home Carlos Beltran with the winning run in the 14th inning for the Mets. The hit was the third of the night for Wright. Beltran had walked and reached second on a passed ball before Wright delivered against Jorge Sosa (0-5). The win was the third straight for New York and the third straight loss for Atlanta.
Rockies 5, Astros 4
DENVER -- Jamey Carroll drew a bases-loaded walk from Dan Wheeler in the bottom of the ninth inning. Astros closer Brad Lidge (0-2) blew his third save in 12 chances. He entered with a 4-3 lead but gave up a leadoff double to Brad Hawpe, who scored the tying run when third baseman Morgan Ensberg overthrew first base on Clint Barmes' sacrifice bunt.
