Jump for Heart money
YOUNGSTOWN -- Pupils at St. Christine School collected more than $1,500 in a Jump for Heart event that will benefit the American Heart Association. Children in kindergarten through the eighth grade sought pledges for the effort and either jumped rope or played basketball to collect on those pledges.
Oratorical contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Randy Jamison of Williamson Elementary School, Youngstown, took first place in the kindergarten division of the seventh annual statewide Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest recently in Columbus. Contestants from kindergarten through grade 12 spoke about the legacy and lessons of Martin Luther King Jr. before family and friends at the King Arts Complex. Speakers were judged on performance, originality and composition. First-place finishers were invited to speak at the 2007 Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration in January.
Summer arts camp
WARREN -- Trumbull County Educational Service Center will offer a summer arts camp for pupils entering second through fifth grades. The day camp, featuring activities and instruction in music, drama, visual arts and dance, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 19-23 at Lordstown Middle School, 6540 Tod Ave. S.W. There is a $150 fee that includes lunches and supplies. Application deadline is May 19; 100 pupils will be accepted. Awards program
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana High School will hold its awards program Monday. "Celebration of Education" will begin at 6 p.m. in the commons area with a display of pupils' artwork and school projects. The high school choir will perform. The awards program will be at 7 in the auditorium followed by a reception.
Senior recognition concert
STONEBORO, Pa. -- Lakeview High School choir and ensembles will present the annual senior recognition concert at 7 p.m. Friday in the auditorium. Featured will be the show choir, chamber singers, men's and women's ensembles and soloists. The show choir and chamber singers will entertain at 11:15 a.m. May 17 at McQuiston Center in Sandy Lake, Pa., and will perform May 19 at Oakview Elementary.
Night of Speech
CANFIELD -- Canfield High School's Night of Speech, planned for 7 p.m. Friday, will showcase five of the school's top speech and debate contestants. The event also is a fundraiser for the students who will represent the school in June at the National Forensic League national tournament in Texas. Admission is free; donations will be accepted. Participating students who qualified for the tournament are seniors Anthony Esposito in domestic extemporaneous speaking and Elysia Shutrump and Michael Teutsch in duo. Also speaking will be sophomores Ben Pecchia and Fady Baky, who led Canfield to a third-place finish at a recent state tournament, in duo. Other students will explain speech and debate categories.
Food court opens
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chaney High School held a grand opening of its food-court style cafeteria May 3. Homemade pepperoni rolls, soups, pizza and sandwiches are part of the minimum five daily choices. The food court is part of Youngstown City School District's $200 million construction project. Two new high schools, Chaney and East, will open in the fall 2007.
