Award for squadron
VIENNA -- The 910th Airlift Wing's Aerial Spray Squadron, with headquarters at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, received the Centers for Disease Control's Partners in Public Health Award for its efforts in mosquito control in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita that devastated the Gulf Coast area in 2005.
The award was presented May 1 at the 2006 National Center for Infectious Diseases Recognition awards ceremony in Atlanta. Specifically, the Aerial Spray Squadron was cited for minimizing the negative impact of mosquitoes on the morale of those working and living without electrical power following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Air Force reservists were deployed in September 2005 to Duke Field, Fla., where they set up a base of operations for the Aerial Spray missions.
Col. Timothy J. Thomson, commander of the 910th Airlift Wing, accepted the award from Rima Khabbaz, director of the NCID, on behalf of the Aerial Spray Squadron. The 910th is home to the only full-time, fixed-wing aerial spray capability in the Department of Defense.
