Chemistry students honored
Twenty students will attend a study camp in Denver.
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The American Chemical Society, Penn-Ohio Border Section, presented awards April 21 at its annual banquet at Westminster College.
The section includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in Ohio and Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania.
The College Award for Excellence in Chemistry was awarded to Tara Cruickshank of Austintown, Youngstown State University. Recognition went to outstanding chemistry students at colleges within the section who were selected by their respective campuses.
Local section honorees
Chemisty Olympiad local section exam honorees are:
Matthew Huber, Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown.
Philip Lehman and Christopher Weber, Grove City High School, Grove City, Pa.
Chirag Dhami and Matt Zimmerman, Howland High School, Warren.
Daniel Smith, LaBrae High School, Leavittsburg.
Phillip Besoiu and Joe Webb, Liberty High School, Liberty.
Recognition went to high school students who scored high enough on the preliminary Chemistry Olympiads Test to take the National Chemistry Olympiads Test. Local high school teachers may nominate a student from their high school to be recognized by the section by the awarding of a certificate at the high school.
The Chemistry Olympiads program is a multitiered competition that promotes excellence in high school chemistry. Twenty students, based on their scores on the National Chemistry Olympiads Test, are selected to attend a two-week study camp during June in Denver. Then, four students of the 20 are selected to represent the United States at the 2006 International Chemistry Olympiad July 2-11 in Gyeongsan, South Korea.
Steven J. DiMuzio of Boardman, LaBrae High School in Leavittsburg, was named Penn-Ohio Border Section High School Teacher of the Year.
