BASEBALL Newberry powers Wilson past Chaney
Mooney won easily while Ursuline edged Springfield.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kevin Newberry pitched and batted Woodrow Wilson past Chaney, 10-5, in a Steel Valley Conference baseball game Friday at Pemberton-Donnell Park.
Newberry and fifth-inning reliever Jarvis Tabb combined to pitch an eight-hitter, while Newberry added a triple, two singles and one RBI.
Tabb also helped at the plate with two singles and one RBI.
Kevin Price chipped in with two singles and three RBIs and Luis Charriez had two singles and two RBIs to also pace Wilson (5-14, 1-6 SVC).
For Chaney (1-17, 1-5), Pat Allen registered 13 strikeouts and two walks with his 11-hitter. Kevin Barron and Joe Balog had two singles each.

STRUTHERS -- Tony Brunetti's two-run homer in the first inning gave the Cardinals (11-11) the lead, and he teamed with Bob Herberger on the mound to make sure they kept it.
Brunetti pitched five innings and Herberger the final two, as they combined on a one-hitter. Brunetti finished 3-for-5, while Herberger had three singles and a triple. John Mayo went 2-for-3.
Stuart Gair's double was the only hit for Western Reserve Academy (3-12).
Ursuline 7,Springfield 6
STRUTHERS -- Eddie Rohan's two-out, two-run single in the last of the ninth inning scored Ken Lapishan and Joe Weilbruda with the tie-breaking and winning runs to lift Ursuline at Cene Park.
Rohan also had a triple, double and three RBIs while Weilbruda chipped in with two singles for Ursuline (15-4).
Ross Revella got the mound win in relief and improved to 4-1. John Houser took the mound loss and fell to 5-2.
For Springfield (17-6), Todd Kibby had two singles and three RBIs.
Campbell 11,Howland 7
CAMPBELL -- Robert Switka had double, single and three RBIs while Lonnie McQueen had three singles and two RBIs to lead Campbell (5-12, 3-6 Metro Athletic Conference) at Roosevelt Park.
Jim Bigley pitched an eight-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk for Campbell.
Ryan Burton added triple and single and Dan Sacui had double and single to aid the Red Devils.
For Howland (15-6), Manoli Pahoulis had two singles

HUBBARD -- Frank Rosile had three singles and Mike Carnahan doubled to lead a 13-hit attack by Hubbard (13-9, 7-4 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Mark Feist doubled to lead the Indians who led 4-0 after three innings.

Liberty 4
LIBERTY -- Lakeview's home run parade was too much for Liberty in a Trumbull Athletic Conference.
Ed Mackiewicz, Josh Daniels and Mark Novotny each slugged a homer to power the Bulldogs (11-10 and 9-4 TAC), who also got a seven-hit pitching job from Novotny who struck out nine and walked four.
Mackiewicz had a three-run shot, Novotny a two-run blast and Daniels a solo homer.
Novotny also had two doubles and three RBIs while Mackiewicz finished with two hits and three RBIs, Daniels two hits and one RBI and Jeff Musick three singles and two RBIs.
Jon Krause ripped a solo homer for Liberty (3-14 and 2-10 TAC).
East Palestine 16,Lisbon 10
EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine scored in every inning and tied the school record for wins in a season (16).
For East Palestine (16-4, 7-3 TCL), Brad Bable had three singles while Dan Hanolt hit a solo homer.
For Lisbon (11-10, 7-5), Lucas Rambo singled twice.
Rootstown 15,Southeast 9
RAVENNA -- A marathon seventh inning -- Rootstown scored six runs in the top of the frame before the Pirates scored eight in the bottom -- concluded this Portage Trail Conference non-division game.
Joe Knopick had three hits, all singles, for Southeast, while Marcus Watson had a pair.
Cory Buso and Tyler Rost both had three hits for Rootstown, including a double apiece.
Boardman 10,Mass. Perry 0
MASSILLON -- Kevin Sikora and Rich Obrien combined on a two-hitter for Boardman in a Federal League game Thursday.
The Spartans scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break the game open. Sikora (6-1) was credited with the win.
Anthony Porter singled twice for Boardman (15-7, 6-3 Federal League), while Joe Iaccabucci homered and Corey Keller tripled. Keller had three RBIs.
Perry is 13-5, 6-3.
Warren Harding 5,Howland 4
HOWLAND -- Andy Dobson homered and Barry Adkins doubled for Warren Harding (16-7) in a game Thursday.
Deandre Ware added a pair of singles for the Raiders, and Greg Patterson pitched four innings for the win. Tom Elder finished the game in relief.
Jared Bartholomew had two RBIs for Howland.
