Youth Orchestra to perform at Powers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra, directed by Stephan Gage and Richard Smrek, will perform the overture to the opera "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss and the First, Third and Fourth movements of the Beethoven Fifth Symphony at 4 p.m. Sunday at Powers Auditorium.
Senior Concerto Competition winner Andrea Albertini from Boardman High School will perform the Saint Saens Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, and Ashley Mitzel from Poland Seminary High School will perform the third movement of Ibert's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra.
Before the Youth Orchestra, the Youngstown Symphony Symphonette, directed by Michele Vari and Edward Madej, will present a program including Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 by Bach, Del Borgo's Celtic Fiddle Tune and McBrien's Peasant Dance.
The Symphonette program began in 1999. Pupils in grades five through seven with at least one year of private string instruction are invited to join. The Symphonette program enables string pupils to perform and hone skills necessary to gain admittance to their school orchestra or the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Tickets for the concert are available by calling the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office at (330) 744-0264.
