Who helped us? Why are our soldiers dying in Iraq?

Who helped us? Why are our soldiers dying in Iraq?

When we were attacked on 9/11, there were many victims' families left to pick up the remains of their loved ones from the rubble. Did anyone from the Middle East offer us assistance rebuilding the Pentagon or the Twin Towers? No. Has the United States been trying for years to reconstruct and bring peace to the Middle East citizens? Yes. The real question is, why?
For years there have been acts of terrorism in the Middle East, and for years there have been peace treaties made and broken. The U.S. has religiously offered aid and relief to people who, obviously, take our offerings for granted and continue to make a mockery of our country.
After reading The Vindicator April 24, I am enraged and disgusted with what is being written in reference to the war. We now know where Osama bin Laden is hiding, so why don't we focus on finding him, instead of making headlines with more U.S. troops' deaths in areas where he is not located? Frankly, I am sick and tired of reading the paper and hearing on the news about death tolls of our troops rising and the increase of suicide while on duty.
We have tried long enough to bring peace and, in return, we get attacked and left to rebuild our homes, our families and our lives by ourselves. Enough is enough. We should bring our troops home. The U.S. can be likened to a "big brother" toward other countries, but sometimes the big brother needs to learn to let go and let these countries fend for themselves.
President George W. Bush is now trying to reverse his father's mistakes, while trying to cover his own. It is now too late.
The American people shouldn't suffer and go without necessities because our leader is trigger happy and figures out solutions with "fuzzy" math. By the U.S. always helping these countries, they do not feel the need to help themselves. They continue to rely on a country that is beginning to dwindle down on funds to support everyone and its own needs.
Get our troops home. Let the people of the Middle East fight and kill their own people, not our people. Start worrying about poverty-stricken families living in the ghetto neighborhoods at home instead of overseas.

I'll take a garage, please

In a recent "How He Sees It," Sen. "Spend Taxpayers' Money" Orrin Hatch outlined his vision of saving American youth from firearm-related deaths by giving a tax break to individuals that purchase gun safes. He stated stolen firearms contribute to the violence in America and this tax break will enable individuals owning firearms to lock up their guns to prevent criminals from stealing them.
I find it hard to believe that the senator suggests spending my tax dollars to reward people who buy firearms, which are inherently dangerous, and do not have enough sense to secure them properly when they leave home. Automobiles cause more deaths than firearms, and criminals frequently steal them to commit crimes; I would like a tax break to build a garage to protect my car from criminals.
I have a better and cheaper suggestion to prevent firearm thefts from homes; take the stickers off your vehicles that suggest, "I got guns!"

Another victim: the landlord

The April 22 story, "Police say filth put children in danger," tells of how CSB took a couple's children due to unsanitary living conditions. This drama began in January in the courts and it was the end of April before the tenants were "planning to move."
This is a scenario repeated over and over in the lives of local landlords. Now the damages and unpaid rent are $9,000. Why aren't the tenants being charged with theft and spending time behind bars for such a crime? The court had no problems with ordering the owner to provide water for these people at his expense. We need to make people be responsible and when they cannot show them that their actions do have consequences.
I have been a landlord for over 20 years.
