Yankees 4, Devil Rays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Alex Rodriguez snapped an 0-for-12 skid with a RBI single in the 10th inning, helping the New York Yankees finish a come-from-behind victory. Rodriguez, who has two hits in his last 18 at-bats broke a 2-2 tie with a line drive to center field off Ruddy Lugo, driving in Johnny Damon, who led off the 10th with a ground-rule double off Tyler Walker (0-2). Hideki Matsui followed with a RBI single to make it 4-2. Kyle Farnsworth (1-0), the fourth of five Yankees pitchers, worked 1 1-3 scoreless innings to get the victory. Mariano Rivera pitched the 10th for his fifth save in six opportunities. Tomas Perez hit a two-run homer off Jaret Wright to give the Devil Rays a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Jorge Posada and Miguel Cairo drove in runs to make it 2-2 in the seventh.
Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 6
BOSTON -- Russ Adams snapped an 0-for-14 slump with a tiebreaking double in the ninth off previously perfect Jonathan Papelbon to lead Toronto. Boston tied it 6-all in the eighth, but with Papelbon pitching in the ninth, Lyle Overbay led off with his fourth hit of the night. Gregg Zaun singled one out later, and Adams doubled down the right-field line. Dustin McGowan (1-0) allowed two hits in one inning. Papelbon (0-1) gave up his first run after 211/3 innings dating to Sept. 19, and his ERA went from a perfect 0.00 to 0.55. B.J. Ryan pitched the ninth for his sixth save, striking out three and getting Jason Varitek looking with the tying run on third base.
Tigers 2, Angels 1
DETROIT -- Alexis Gomez hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, and Detroit beat slumping Los Angeles to extend its winning streak to six. Brandon Inge homered to tie the score in the sixth, then walked with one out in the eighth against former Tiger Jeff Weaver (1-4). Inge advanced on Ramon Santiago's forceout, Scot Shields relieved and, with two outs, Gomez singled to center. Joel Zumaya (1-0) got his first major league win, throwing six pitches and retiring Orlando Cabrera and Garret Anderson on flyouts. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his fifth save, completing a four-hitter. Tigers starter Nate Robertson allowed four hits in 71/3 innings, striking out six and walking two. He has allowed one run in his last three starts, a span of 211/3 innings.
Twins 6, Royals 1
MINNEAPOLIS -- Brad Radke pitched his best game of the season, allowing four hits in seven innings to lead Minnesota over reeling Kansas City. The Royals, on their second losing streak of six games or more this season, are 0-12 on the road this year, one shy of the record for most consecutive road losses at the start of a season, set by the 1969 Houston Astros. Radke (3-3), coming off the poorest April of his major league career, struck out seven and walked none, lowering his ERA from 8.89 to 7.29. Joe Mays (0-4) gave up six runs -- two earned -- and eight hits in 31/3 innings against his former team. Minnesota scored four unearned runs in the third after Rondell White reached on a two-base error. Shannon Stewart had a run-scoring single for a 1-0 lead, Joe Mauer hit an RBI groundout and Torii Hunter connected on the next pitch for a 427-foot, two-run homer to center.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Giants 2, Brewers 0
MILWAUKEE -- Barry Bonds didn't come any closer to catching Babe Ruth after getting bonked in the head during batting practice. Instead it was Pedro Feliz who went deep, and Jason Schmidt pitched a gem to lead the Giants. Schmidt (2-2) outpitched Dave Bush (2-3), scattering five hits and striking out seven for his ninth career shutout. He retired 13 of 14 during one stretch. However, he got in trouble in the ninth, giving up singles to Brady Clark and Jenkins. Clark advanced to third on a fielder's choice but Schmidt struck out Prince Fielder to end the game. Bush allowed three hits in eight innings, but one was the two-run homer by Feliz in the second. He struck out six while walking none.
Phillies 5, Braves 4
PHILADELPHIA -- Aaron Rowand's two-run homer in the eighth inning lifted Philadelphia to its third straight comeback victory. The Phillies have won a season-high four straight games and are one game under .500 at 13-14 for the first time since they lost their opener. Brett Myers pitched seven solid innings and Rheal Cormier (2-0) got one out in the eighth inning for the victory. Tom Gordon pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save in as many chances. Jeff Francoeur's RBI single off Ryan Franklin put Atlanta ahead 4-3 in the eighth, but Philadelphia rallied against Mike Remlinger (1-2) after John Smoltz came out following seven strong innings.
Astros 5, Cardinals 4
HOUSTON -- Roy Oswalt pitched eight strong innings and Lance Berkman drove in three runs to lead Houston over St. Louis. Oswalt (5-1) gave up only four hits, but three were solo home runs. Brad Lidge pitched the ninth inning for his 10th save in 12 opportunities, but allowed a one-out RBI single to Jim Edmonds. Houston led 5-1 before Albert Pujols and Hector Luna homered to almost the same spot in left field in consecutive innings off of Oswalt to cut the lead to 5-3 in the eighth. Houston jumped out to an early lead when Berkman hit a two-run double in the first before scoring on Jason Lane's sacrifice fly to center field. Willy Taveras chased starter Jason Marquis (3-3) with a RBI-triple to the right-field corner in the sixth inning. Berkman's second double of the night scored Taveras and gave Houston a 5-1 lead.
Rockies 3, Reds 0
DENVER -- Jeff Francis allowed four hits over seven innings for his first win in six starts this season and Colorado beat Cincinnati to end a two-game losing streak. Francis (1-2) struck out five and walked one in winning for the first time since Sept. 28 at Atlanta, his last start last season. Jose Mesa pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Brian Fuentes worked the ninth to complete the Rockies' first shutout of the season and earn his sixth save. Matt Holliday was 3-for-4 with a two-run double and Danny Ardoin had an RBI single for Colorado. Brandon Claussen (2-3) allowed three runs and seven hits in 62/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.
