House fire and car crash keep fire crew busy
STRUTHERS -- An Elm Street resident was injured in a house fire, and a Youngstown man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, after firefighters cut him from his overturned vehicle.
Firefighters and police were investigating both situations at press time.
The two calls kept city firefighters busy Wednesday night. They arrived around 7:30 p.m. to find the first floor of the 2 1/2 story house at 363 Elm St. fully engulfed in flames.
The occupants, a man in his 20s and his female companion, have a place to stay, firefighters said.
The cause has not been determined, and no loss estimate was available.
Firefighters said the man was sleeping in a downstairs bedroom and the sound of the fire woke him. The woman was not home. The man escaped but burned his hand on a hot doorknob. Firefighters said he refused treatment.
Firefighters rescued a cat and a turtle, and another cat was missing Wednesday night.
Firefighters were at the scene about two hours, and were then called to assist with a car crash around 9:30 p.m.
Police said an unidentified 18-year-old Youngstown man traveling at a high rate of speed from Youngstown was driving fast on Mount Vernon Avenue and was unable to bear right. He lost control and the car, which crossed Walton Street and crashed into a fence at a construction business at Walton and Midlothian Boulevard, where it overturned, police said.
