Club to induct four new members in hall of fame
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Road Runners Club will induct four new members in its hall of fame at its May 20 banquet.
The new members are Steve Hixson, Jim McKenna, Ron Posey and Mike Handel (posthumously).
Hixson was an outstanding runner for Liberty High School, having won the state title in his senior year. He lettered for four years in cross-country at The Ohio State University.
Hixson has participated in many major races from 5K to the marathon, and he ran in the 100th Boston Marathon. He has been the race director for the Firecracker 4 Miler for the past 18 years.
He has been supportive to local high school runners and Youngstown State University runners, as he has employed many at his Second Sole store while they were attending college.
Posey taught at Cardinal Mooney High School until 1961, then taught at Niles High School from 1963-85.
He coached football, basketball and track for various schools including Mooney, Tallmadge and St. Brendan. He also scouted many years for Hubbard High School.
Posey is a member of the Warren YMCA Running Club and has been a member of YRCC since 1977.
McKenna is a retired teacher for Youngstown City Schools. A 26-year member of YRCC, he was also a member of the 100 Mile Club most of those years.
He has been a trustee for YRRC and helped at numerous races. He completed nine marathons, including Boston and Chicago. He and his wife raised three sons who are all runners.
Handel became a member of the YRCC in 1977. He was a trustee for weekend runs and helped YRCC promote and time races.
