71 people applying to be township administrator

BOARDMAN -- Seventy-one people, one from Massachusetts, hope to be the township's new administrator.
Among the local applicants:
Trumbull County Administrator Anthony Carson;
Hubbard City Auditor Michael Villano;
Rhonda Baldwin, the treasurer of Brookfield Schools;
William L. Cowan, East Liverpool's city engineer, director of planning and service/safety director;
Robert Rupeka, vice president of the Economic and Community Development Institute, Youngstown.
The Massachusetts applicant, Daniel Baker, most recently worked as a public relations representative at Worcester State College in Worcester, Mass. The application deadline was Friday.
The job opened when trustees fired longtime administrator Curt B. Seditz without cause at a special meeting March 31. Christina Griffith, deputy administrator, has been working as acting administrator since then. She didn't apply for the permanent appointment.
Trustee Kathy Miller said the board hasn't yet reviewed the applications or discussed a procedure for filling the post.
The position was posted on several online sites including CareerBuilder.com, Monster.com and the Ohio Township Association and the township Web sites. It listed a bachelor's degree in business or public administration as a minimum qualification with graduate education or professional certificates preferred.
Other requirements
It also cites five-plus years of "progressively responsible management experience, preferably with experience working in the public sector" as well as interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and a person who is well-versed in the collective bargaining realm with a proven track record with maintaining/balancing a budget.
The salary is commensurate with experience. Seditz, who occupied the post for about 10 years, was to earn about $78,000 this year.
Carson, of Cortland has been Trumbull County's administrator since January 2004. He has a bachelor's degree in general studies from Kent State University.
Villano, of Hubbard, has been that city's auditor since 1998. He has a master's degree in public administration from Cleveland State University.
Baldwin, of Warren, has been Brookfield schools' treasurer since 2004 and has a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Youngstown State University.
Cowan, who has served in his East Liverpool position since 1992, has a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from YSU.
Rupeka, who left his position as the administrator of the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in 2005 for the current post, has a master's in business administration from YSU.
Although the ad says that r & eacute;sum & eacute;s, cover letter and salary requirements may be sent to the township in confidence, they must be released under Ohio's open-records law.
